Part Time Breaking News Reporter

Summary:The Denver Post is seeking a part-time breaking news reporter to work at least one weekend shift and an early morning shift. The successful applicant must be able to juggle multiple assignments and make good decisions about what subjects to tackle first. The ability to source and monitor multiple streams of information -- from police to competitors -- is a must, as is the ability to write quick, clear, accurate and engaging stories and headlines. What you will do:Develop story ideas in coordination with assignment editorResearch, observe surroundings and conduct interviews over the telephone and in person to gather pertinent information for news storiesInteract with colleagues in a professional mannerOrganize information and write an accurate, clear, interesting and grammatically correct story while meeting deadlinesProduce stories of varying complexity and formSeek out and report news for immediate publication on the Post’s digital platforms or for print publicationsDiscuss story formulation with editors and edit or rewrite stories, as necessaryUse digital tools to report and promote Denver Post materialUnderstand and implement SEO techniques to ensure content reaches largest online audience; stay abreast of latest trendsCreate and curate content for a dynamic web presenceRequest appropriate photos and graphics for stories; work closely with visual journalists to provide clear explanations of assignments; shoot photos and videos when necessary and transmit them promptly for digital publicationWhat you will bring:Reporting, writing and editing skills, including knowledge of AP styleStrong news judgmentUnderstanding of SEO and digital production techniques and usesKnowledge of digital storytelling methodsAbility to cultivate sourcesKnowledge of analytics and how to use them in decision makingBachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field or equivalent experienceBasic understanding of standard curation techniquesAbility to multi-task and work quickly to meet deadlinesBenefits and Compensation:The hourly wage is $28.68 + cell stipend and mileage reimbursement.
