About the role
C.I HENGSTBERGER & J STOCKDALE operates an established small-to-medium-sized commercial dairy farm in Mardan, Victoria, managing a herd of more than 500 cattle.
We are seeking a reliable and experienced Dairy Cattle Farmer to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis. The successful applicant will plan, organise and coordinate daily dairy operations while remaining actively involved in milk production, herd management and general farm activities.
This position requires practical dairy farming experience, sound decision-making skills, and the ability to take responsibility for key areas of the farm’s operations.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, organise and coordinate daily dairy farming activities, with a focus on milk production, herd performance and animal welfare.
- Manage breeding, calving and herd fertility programs, including assisting with the rearing of calves and replacement heifers.
- Monitor livestock health, condition, and behaviour, and organise treatment, vaccination, drenching, and veterinary attention as required.
- Develop and implement feeding and nutrition programs to maintain herd health and production levels.
- Manage pasture utilisation, fodder requirements, water supply and the movement of cattle between paddocks.
- Organise and carry out milking operations, including preparing cattle, operating milking equipment and maintaining milk quality and hygiene standards.
- Clean, sterilise and maintain milking machinery, dairy facilities and associated equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of milk production, breeding, livestock health, treatments, feeding, and cattle movements.
- Monitor milk production, herd performance, and operating costs, and use farm records and market information to inform production plans, budgets, and resource requirements.
- Coordinate the purchase, sale and transportation of livestock and farm produce where required.
- Oversee the maintenance of fences, cattle yards, sheds, laneways, water systems, irrigation infrastructure and other farm facilities.
- Safely operate tractors, loaders, farm vehicles and other agricultural machinery.
- Assist with pasture improvement, fodder production, fertilising, weed control and other seasonal farm activities.
- Supervise and support farm workers and contractors where required.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with workplace health and safety, biosecurity, and animal welfare requirements.
Additional duties
- Move cattle to and from paddocks, milking areas and cattle yards.
- Undertake general dairy clean-up, maintenance and farm work as required.
- Assist with emergency, seasonal, and after-hours livestock requirements as needed.
What you will bring
- A relevant bachelor's degree or higher qualification in agriculture, animal science, dairy production or a related field; or at least five years of relevant dairy-farming experience.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience working with a commercial dairy herd.
- Experience in planning and coordinating dairy operations, rather than undertaking only routine milking or general farm-hand duties.
- Practical knowledge of milking systems, breeding, calving, livestock health, nutrition and pasture management.
- Experience in identifying illness, injury and changes in livestock condition or behaviour.
- Competence in operating and maintaining farm machinery and dairy equipment.
- Strong record-keeping, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- A reliable, responsible and practical approach to work.
- Physical fitness to undertake sustained farm work in varying weather conditions.
- A current driver’s licence and reliable transport.
- Availability to work rostered hours, including early mornings, weekends and public holidays where required.
