Engineering Manager, Media Foundations and Delivery

 Video consumption on our platform is experiencing massive organic growth, and we are heavily investing in integrating media as a functional layer of human discussion.

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Media Foundations & Delivery team. In this role, you will help transition media into a first-class citizen with a strong technical foundation and extensible architecture. You will lead a cross-functional group of Backend, iOS, Android, and Web engineers to evolve our media stack and to unlock the next phase of growth at Reddit.

What You'll Do

• Drive Infrastructure Modernization: Lead the architectural shift to elevate media to a first class citizen.
• Optimize Playback & Delivery: Own key success metrics related to Quality of Services (QoS), including Time to First Frame (TTFF), stall/rebuffer rates, exits before video screen (EBVS). You will define the path to ensure reliable streaming for all of our users across the globe.
• Manage Global Distribution: Partner closely with our infrastructure teams to define how to scale media via Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), edge computing, and caching strategies.
• Standardize Formats: You will drive the standardization of our stack, from streaming protocols (HLS, MPEG-DASH) to container formats (CMAF, MP4).
• Champion a culture of innovation and experimentation, where team members are encouraged to explore, test, and refine novel ideas, while balancing platform scale with product velocity.
• Establish a clear technical vision and direction for our media systems, while staying ahead of the curve in terms of emerging technologies.
• Navigate ambiguity with confidence, utilizing data-driven insights to guide the team towards successful outcomes.
• Work in close partnership with Product, Data, and ML teams to ensure effective leadership, alignment with broader organizational objectives, and maximum impact.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
• 8+ years of industry experience, including 3+ years of engineering management experience, specifically leading complex, high-volume consumer systems. Experience managing cross-platform teams (Backend and Mobile/Client) is highly preferred.
• Proficiency in at least one programming language (Java, Go, Python).
• A strong background in video streaming technologies, CDN routing, and media ingestion. You should understand the intricacies of multi-part uploads, encoding schedulers, and adaptive bitrate streaming.
• Proven ability to balance immediate performance fixes (e.g., MP4 playback optimizations) with long-term architectural overhauls (e.g., media delivery at the edge, caching strategies).
• Experience defining and governing clear Service Level Objectives and Indicators (SLOS, SLIs) to drive media investment decisions.
• Proven ability to brainstorm and implement experimental ideas to drive growth.
• Exceptional leadership, team management, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Experience managing media creation experience, such as video or image editing tools, composers, or UIs for creators.

This job posting may span more than one career level.

In addition to base salary, this job is eligible to receive equity in the form of restricted stock units, and depending on the position offered, it may also be eligible to receive a commission. We set standard base pay ranges for all roles based on function, level, and country location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including, skills, depth of work experience and relevant licenses/credentials, and may vary from the amounts listed below.

The base salary range for this position is:$217,000—$303,000 USD
