Junior Legal Applications Engineer
As a Junior Legal Applications Engineer, you will join a well-established team who are delivering innovative legal solutions using legal technology and AI for the firm and its clients.
You will learn how technology is transforming legal service delivery and play a part in that journey. You will get hands-on experience working with diverse legal technology platforms, actively contribute to building and maintaining internal applications, and play an integral role in delivering legally focused, but technology-enabled projects.
Collaboration is at the heart of this position: you will work side by side with legal applications experts, lawyers, IT professionals, and external suppliers to help build solutions that make a real difference to how legal services are delivered by the firm.
This role provides training and mentorship from experienced team members and the opportunity to build skills in automation, workflow design, data analysis and low-code / no-code solution development. This is an entry‑level position designed for candidates who have recently completed a degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related analytical field and who are seeking to begin their career in legal technology.
This role reports to the Applications Development Manager.
Role and responsibilities
Application Support and Maintenance
- Assist in the basic administration, configuration and routine maintenance of legal and AI technology applications.
- Log issues, gather relevant information and support senior colleagues in resolving first‑level technical queries.
- Carry out scheduled system checks, updates and maintenance activities under supervision.
- Maintain accurate records of configuration changes, updates and support activity.
- Escalate technical or operational issues appropriately to senior team members or suppliers.
- Assist in creating reports and dashboards related to application usage and performance.
Technical Development Assistance
- Contribute to the design and development of internal applications using a variety of technologies.
- Support testing activities and assist senior colleagues in developing prototypes.
- Stay informed about emerging trends in legal technology, learn from these, and share insights with the team.
- Contribute to promoting the adoption of legal technology tools across the firm.
Legal Workflow and Process Support
- Support senior team members in developing legal workflows across all the firm’s practice areas.
- Assist in mapping legal and business processes and identifying opportunities for improvement or automation.
- Help prepare materials that explain how legal technology tools support legal service delivery.
Project Support
- Contribute to project activities including planning, development and delivery of technology‑led solutions.
- Help gather project requirements and assist with implementing updates or enhancements.
- Support go‑live activities by helping coordinate tasks and assisting in preparing documentation.
- Help draft and update documentation including user guides and ‘how-to’ guides.
- Prepare materials for presentations, demonstrations and training sessions.
- Support stakeholder communication by drafting updates, summaries and progress notes for senior colleagues.
Skills, experience and characteristics required
- Interested in the business operation of law firms, their legal service delivery processes and how technology can support the delivery of their services.
- Knowledge of development concepts, automation tools, or collaboration platforms gained through university projects, internships, or outcome-oriented self-directed learning.
- Strong ability to quickly learn how to use AI tools and other legal technology platforms and apply these in practice.
- Very familiar with Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and ideally experience with using other Microsoft tools (Power Platform, Power BI etc.)
- A keen interest in (and ideally practical experience of) leveraging technology to address real‑world challenges in the delivery of legal / professional service offerings.
- Knowledgeable of at least one programming or scripting language (for example Python, JavaScript) and an ability to further develop programming / low-code / workflow skills.
- Strong professional communication and presentation skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively, build relationships, and work with various stakeholders across the business.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise effectively.
- Strong self‑motivation with strong attention to detail and a positive, proactive approach to learning.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic environment and enthusiastic about developing new skills.
Qualifications
- Educated to degree level in Engineering, Physics, Economics or a related analytical field.
- Academic, internship or project experience which demonstrates an interest in solution development, automation or data technologies.
