As an Aged Care Advocate, you will play a vital role in empowering older people to exercise their rights. By providing essential information, education and unwavering support, you’ll help them navigate their aged care journey with confidence.

Our dedicated team of Aged Care Advocates delivers personalised advocacy tailored to individual needs. Whether it’s helping someone understand their aged care requirements, enhancing communication with service providers, clarifying aged care fees, or addressing concerns and complaints, you’ll have the opportunity to make a real impact. Standing beside older people, you’ll ensure their voices are heard, their rights upheld and their experiences transformed.

Role Responsibilities

As an Aged Care Advocate, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Listening to and supporting older people who are receiving or seeking aged care services, as well as their representatives, to make informed decisions through telephone and face-to-face support.
  • Advocating on behalf of clients in response to concerns raised with aged care service providers.
  • Advocating on behalf of older people receiving or seeking to receive aged care services to ensure their rights are upheld and responded to appropriately.
  • Managing information and advocacy cases using Salesforce database.
  • Referring clients to other services including the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.
  • Providing education and information sessions to aged care recipients within Residential Aged Care.
  • Assisting in developing and maintaining appropriate information resources for clients.
  • Participating in seniors’ events, information days, displays and exhibitions in the local area.
  • Contributing to promotional campaigns targeting identified priority groups.
  • Participating in the maintenance and development of local networks and relationships to promote Seniors Rights Service and expand its reach.
  • Contributing to identification and monitoring of systemic issues arising for people receiving or seeking to receive aged care services and/or their representatives.
  • Travelling intrastate for work as required.

Essential Criteria:

  1. Degree or equivalent education in social work, psychology or related field, or equivalent relevant experience
  2. Sound knowledge and understanding of the aged care system in NSW and familiarity with community resources for additional support
  3. Strong commitment to human rights, social justice and diversity
  4. Experience engaging with people who have lived experience of trauma
  5. Previous experience in applying advocacy that champions client voice and agency
  6. Be willing to register and authenticate as an advocate agent for professional use of the My Aged Care online portal.
  7. Demonstrated experience in planning and delivering workshops and presentations
  8. Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  9. Skills in negotiation, teamwork, conflict resolution, decision making and problem solving.
  10. Understanding of ageism and how it effects older people and their rights
  11. Excellent computer skills, fluent in Microsoft Office 365 and database management
  12. Willing to use your own registered and comprehensively insured vehicle, where you will be reimbursed for work related mileage claims
  13. Willingness to obtain an annual flu vaccination and hold a valid National Criminal History check and NSW driver’s license as a condition of employment
