About the Project
Transport for London (TfL) has awarded Indra a long-term contract to operate, develop, enhance and expand ticketing and access control systems across London’s transport network through to 2034, with extension options to 2039.
This programme covers the maintenance, operation and evolution of a large-scale, complex ecosystem, including turnstiles, validators, ticket machines, sales terminals, back-office systems, payment gateways, IT infrastructure and cybersecurity that supports over 8.6 million daily journeys.
Therefore, Indra will become TfL’s strategic technology partner to guarantee the operation and evolution of the world’s largest and most sophisticated ticketing system. Following a transition period of approximately two years, Indra will serve as the sole provider across the network that includes more than 8,500 buses, nearly 400 Underground stations, around 300 rail stations (Overground, DLR, Elizabeth Line and suburban services), 4,000 Oyster Card outlets, seven customer service centres, and 24 river boat boarding points.
Drawing on over 30 years of experience in urban public transport solutions, Indra will manage and evolve all aspects of the system. The project also envisages, in partnership with TfL, the implementation of new technologies to develop the system, make it more efficient and automate key processes; in short, to jointly create the next generation of the ticketing system for London.
Summary
We are seeking a Senior Wintel Engineer to support the Mobilisation, Knowledge Transfer, Operational Readiness and Early Life Support activities associated with the transition of critical Back Office IT services into the Indra/Minsait operating model.
This is a technically focused role with strong operational depth in Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, VMware and hybrid Microsoft environments. The successful candidate will help establish the future Wintel support capability, validate day-to-day operational processes, capture and remediate knowledge gaps, and ensure that Windows platform services can be assumed safely and sustainably.
The role will work closely with customer stakeholders, incumbent supplier SMEs, service management functions, infrastructure teams, application support teams, security representatives and programme leadership. The emphasis is on controlled mobilisation, operational readiness validation, incident and change readiness, monitoring and alerting coverage, backup and recovery assurance, service acceptance evidence and early-life stabilisation following service takeover.
Key responsibilities

• Knowledge transfer and operational handover: Participate in structured knowledge transfer, shadowing and reverse shadowing across Windows Server, Active Directory, VMware and related infrastructure services, focusing on operational procedures, failure scenarios, escalation paths and known risks.
• Windows platform operations: Operate and maintain Microsoft Windows Server environments, Active Directory, Cluster Services, Group Policy, application services and related infrastructure components, supporting availability, performance, capacity, housekeeping and configuration control.
• Virtualisation and hybrid infrastructure support: Support VMware-based virtualisation platforms and hybrid Microsoft environments, including operational checks, incident triage, patching preparation, capacity observations and coordination with adjacent infrastructure teams.
• Incident, problem and service restoration: Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex Wintel incidents, performing triage, service restoration, root cause analysis and follow-up problem management activities in line with ITIL practices.
• Operational procedures and runbooks: Review, improve and create SOPs, runbooks, support guides and knowledge articles covering start/stop procedures, event response, backup validation, recovery, patching, health checks, log review, performance investigation, capacity checks and failover support.
• Monitoring, backup and resilience assurance: Validate monitoring, alerting, backup, recovery, high availability and disaster recovery arrangements for Windows and virtualised services, ensuring operational evidence is available before service acceptance and during Early Life Support.
• Governance, risk and service acceptance: Support service acceptance, Go/No-Go reviews and transition governance by providing evidence of operational control, tooling access, documentation readiness, support capability, open risks and remediation actions.
• Early Life Support delivery: Provide 3rd-line and on-call support during Early Life Support after cutover, monitor incident trends and alerts, coordinate rapid resolution with adjacent teams, capture lessons learned and embed improvements into BAU processes.
