Head of Total Rewards
About Volta
Volta is the category-defining, fully vertically integrated AI infrastructure platform – from capital to clusters to software, under a founder-led enterprise. Our mission is The Utility of Compute™: AI infrastructure as dependable and available as electricity, for every organization that needs it. Launched with a $10B strategic partnership with one of the leading frontier AI labs, a Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz, and a $5B AI Infrastructure Fund, Volta is building the infrastructure layer of the AI era from the ground up. We are 100+ people across London, Palo Alto, and New York, with rapid growth expectations to hundreds.
About The Role
The Head of Total Rewards is responsible for developing and delivering Volta's global reward strategy, ensuring our compensation, equity and benefits programs enable us to attract, retain and motivate exceptional talent while maintaining governance, cost discipline and compliance. As we scale internationally, you will establish and evolve the reward frameworks that support our growth, creating competitive pay structures, scalable global benefits and consistent reward practices across multiple countries.
This is a hands-on, build-from-the-ground-up role rather than a governance-only position. As Volta's first dedicated reward specialist, you will work closely with the VP of People and partner with Finance, Talent Acquisition and the Executive Team to shape and embed best-in-class reward practices.
Building on the foundations already in place — including our job architecture, benchmarking methodology, share option plan and multi-country employment model — you will establish a robust, scalable reward capability that supports rapid international growth and positions Volta as an employer of choice in the AI infrastructure market.
What You Will Be Doing
Develop and evolve Volta's global compensation philosophy and reward strategy, and design and maintain salary bands, job architecture and market benchmarking frameworks
Review all new hire offers, promotions and salary changes to ensure consistency, competitiveness and alignment with internal governance, and support pay equity and executive compensation decisions
Act as the reward escalation point for Talent Acquisition and hiring managers on offer construction, competitive positioning, counter-offer scenarios and out-of-range approvals
Own the benefits philosophy and design Volta's global benefits strategy country by country, balancing competitiveness, cost and consistency of employee experience
Lead the selection, negotiation and roll-out of benefits programs in new and existing markets, including medical, risk, pension and wellbeing provision, and manage insurer and broker relationships
Run day-to-day benefits administration, including US medical and 401(k), UK pension and risk benefits and European statutory and supplementary provision, ensuring compliance in every jurisdiction
Own end-to-end design and delivery of the annual salary and bonus review cycle, including timetable, budget modeling, guidelines, manager tooling, moderation, approvals and communication
Develop bonus frameworks, incentive schemes and recognition programs, and equip managers to make and explain reward decisions with clear guidance and calibration support
Set and benchmark equity grant guidelines by level and geography, integrate equity into total reward positioning and offers, and recommend grant levels for new hires, promotions and refresh cycles in partnership with Finance
Ensure reward decisions comply with internal governance and global employment legislation, including the EU Pay Transparency Directive and equal pay requirements, and produce reward analytics and reporting
What You Bring
Demonstrable experience owning compensation and benefits in a scaling organization, ideally in technology, cloud, infrastructure or another high-growth sector
Practical, hands-on experience of both North American and European compensation and benefits, including US medical and retirement provision and European statutory and supplementary benefits
Proven ownership of a salary benchmarking approach: market pricing, range build and maintenance
Experience running an annual salary review or merit cycle end to end, including budget modeling and manager communication
Working knowledge of employee equity plans and how equity fits within total reward, and comfortable partnering with Finance on plan mechanics
Strong stakeholder management skills, able to advise and influence the Executive Team, Finance and Talent Acquisition
Excellent analytical skills, comfortable building and presenting reward data, modeling and commercial insight
