Team Overview
The Impact Enablement group at FinDev Canada advances our development mandate through four specialized functions: (i) Impact Strategy & Thought Leadership, (ii) Environmental, Climate and Social Risk, (iii) Technical Assistance, and (iv) Development Impact.
This position sits within the Impact Strategy & Thought Leadership (IS&TL) function, which drives the evolution of FinDev Canada's impact architecture. The team shapes the corporation's strategic approach to climate and nature action, gender equality, and market development; develops leading-edge impact methodologies, tools, and frameworks; conducts advanced impact and climate analytics; and produces thought leadership that contributes to industry best practices.
Following the Government of Canada's recent capital injection for international climate finance, FinDev Canada is entering an exciting phase of growth and ambition. Reporting to the Director, IS&TL, the Senior Associate, Climate will contribute to the advancement of FinDev Canada's climate-related methodologies, analytics, and strategic initiatives. Working closely with colleagues across Impact Enablement, Investments, and Strategy & Engagement, the successful candidate will help strengthen our approach to climate measurement, greenhouse gas accounting, transition finance, and Paris alignment.
This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of climate finance, development impact, and analytics, contributing to innovative approaches that help FinDev Canada deliver results in emerging markets.
What You Will Be Doing
- Translate complex climate and impact concepts into practical methodologies, tools, and guidance that support decision-making, impact measurement, and reporting across the organization.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of FinDev Canada's approaches to transition finance, Paris alignment, and other strategic climate initiatives.
- Develop and apply quantitative models to estimate and project impact outcomes, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduced, avoided, and sequestered.
- Support FinDev Canada's annual financed emissions and GHG accounting processes in collaboration with external experts and support the preparation of climate-related disclosures.
- Conduct rigorous quantitative and qualitative research to generate actionable insights and recommendations on climate finance and development impact topics.
- Prepare clear and compelling briefing materials, presentations, and recommendations for senior management, the Board of Directors, and external stakeholders.
- Represent FinDev Canada in industry working groups, peer-learning initiatives, and external forums, translating emerging knowledge and best practices into practical internal guidance.
- Design and deliver learning initiatives to strengthen climate-related knowledge and capabilities across the organization.
- Support other strategic priorities and projects that contribute to the objectives of the team and the corporation.
What We Are Looking For
- Relevant degree in economics, environmental science, climate policy, sustainable finance, international development, engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 3-5 years of relevant practical experience in development finance, sustainable finance, impact investing, ESG, climate consulting, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of GHG accounting methodologies, including the GHG Protocol, financed emissions methodologies (e.g., PCAF), and climate-related disclosure frameworks.
- Knowledge of climate finance concepts and practices, including climate impact measurement, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including experience with statistical analysis, modelling, and interpreting complex datasets.
- Experience working with large datasets and analytical tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, SQL, R, Python, or equivalent) to support analysis, modelling, and decision-making.
- Superior written, presentation, and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts simply and present analyses in a structured manner.
- Experience working on climate and development impact issues within financial institutions, development finance institutions, impact investors, consulting firms, or other relevant organizations.
What Will Make You Stand Out
- Experience working within a Development Finance Institution (DFI), Multilateral Development Bank (MDB), impact investor, or climate-focused advisory firm.
- Experience assessing climate impacts and risks in sectors such as sustainable infrastructure, financial institutions, agriculture, or nature-based solutions in emerging and developing markets.
- Familiarity with climate and development challenges in emerging and developing markets.
