Managing Editor

US Democratic Socialists — a socialist news Substack from the team behind Raw Story and Really American — is hiring a dedicated, hard-working Managing Editor to help build the largest socialist news site in America. This is a job for someone who shares our politics and our drive, and who wants to be at the vanguard of news and politics at one of the most consequential moments in a generation.

The ideal candidate is a journalist with sharp news judgment, boundless energy, and a genuine commitment to democratic socialist politics. You'll shape a brand from the ground up, work directly with our Capitol Hill reporter, and put yourself at the center of American political life. If you want to be where it's all happening, this is the job for you.

Running a Substack requires dexterity in various formats, including writing, editing, and on-camera live interviews. Experience working for a large Substack and familiarity with the Substack platform is a plus. Excellent writing skills, some reporting background, and fundraising experience are also highly valued. You must be technically proficient in online journalism tools. Some on-camera experience is also useful, including on-camera interviews or experience making short videos for Instagram or TikTok.

Key Responsibilities:

• Edit and produce the daily newsletter, from breaking news to original analysis

• Write compelling subscription appeals that convert readers into paying supporters

• Conduct live interviews with socialist candidates, elected officials, and movement leaders

• Work closely with our Capitol Hill reporter and freelance contributors to coordinate coverage

• Help shape the editorial voice and identity of a fast-growing brand at the vanguard of American politics

• Unearth stories and angles the mainstream media won't touch

Key Requirements:

• A genuine commitment to democratic socialist politics and our mission to build the largest socialist news operation in the country

• Proven ability to edit and produce high-volume coverage on a daily deadline

• Strong news judgment and a deep interest in the fast-paced breaking news cycle

• Comfort on camera and the ability to conduct engaging live interviews

• At least two years of editing experience, ideally in political or breaking news

• Familiarity with social media channels and effective story promotion

• Early morning, some nights, and some weekends required
