Head of Design — Confidential Client
Fast-growing, well-capitalized technology company building a new category of software for the wealth management and private-client ecosystem is looking for their first Head of Design. The company is using AI and proprietary data infrastructure to modernize highly complex workflows around wealth transfer, tax, estate planning, and related advisory services.
Its customers include sophisticated organizations across wealth management, private banking, trust, tax, and legal services. The business has already achieved meaningful commercial traction and is now entering an important phase of product and organizational growth.
For confidentiality, I’m sharing the company name and additional identifying details directly with qualified candidates rather than posting them publicly.
$250k + negotiable, 100% employee health insurance coverage (plus 50% dependent coverage), monthly wellness stipend, unlimited PTO, 401(k), parental leave.
The Opportunity
The company is looking for a Head of Design to take ownership of the design function and help define the next generation of its product experience. Understanding of building teams, complex workflows, and start-up mentality or experience is highly preferred.
This is an unusually hands-on leadership opportunity. You’ll lead a small, high-caliber design team while continuing to operate as a product designer yourself. You’ll work closely with senior Product and Engineering leadership to influence product strategy, establish the design vision, and raise the quality bar across the organization.
The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys moving between strategy and execution: setting direction for a design organization, developing designers, establishing effective processes and systems, and personally tackling some of the company's most important product challenges.
The product itself involves sophisticated users, complex workflows, and high-stakes financial decisions, so this is a particularly interesting opportunity for a designer who enjoys turning complexity into experiences that feel clear, intuitive, and elegant.
What you'll own
Lead the overall design function, with primary emphasis on product design while also providing direction across brand and broader experience design.
Manage and develop the existing senior design team while establishing a plan for future team growth.
Define the design vision, principles, and quality bar across the product organization.
Partner closely with Product and Engineering leadership on product strategy, prioritization, and execution.
Develop a deep understanding of customers, their day-to-day workflows, and the problems they're trying to solve.
Personally lead design for high-priority initiatives, from discovery and research through product definition, interaction design, visual design, and launch.
Build effective design practices around critique, collaboration, research, and feedback.
Continue developing a scalable design system that improves consistency, usability, and velocity.
Help embed customer empathy and strong design thinking into the broader company culture.
Mentor and develop designers while creating an environment where ambitious, high-quality work can flourish.
What we're looking for
Over 10 years of design experience, including meaningful experience leading and managing strong design teams.
A portfolio that demonstrates excellent product judgment, interaction design, visual craft, and the ability to make complex software feel simple.
Experience working closely with Product and Engineering leadership to shape product direction—not simply execute against predefined requirements.
A track record of hiring, mentoring, and developing designers and building high-performing design organizations.
Strong systems thinking, including experience with design systems, design operations, and scalable product-development practices.
Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and work effectively across functions.
Experience designing sophisticated B2B software or SaaS products. Experience in financial technology, enterprise software, or another complex/high-trust domain would be particularly relevant.
Experience across web and mobile products.
Familiarity with front-end technologies such as HTML/CSS is helpful but not required.
Why this is an interesting opportunity
This role offers the chance to join a company at a point where design can genuinely influence the trajectory of the business.
You'll work directly with an experienced executive team and have substantial access to senior Product, Engineering, and company leadership. Rather than inheriting a large design organization, you'll have the opportunity to shape how the function evolves as the company grows.
The product sits at the intersection of AI, financial technology, data, and highly complex professional workflows, creating unusually rich design problems to solve.
It's also an environment where the expectation is to move quickly, stay close to customers, ship frequently, and learn from real-world usage. The Head of Design will have significant visibility and influence, with the opportunity to establish the design culture, systems, and standards that will support the company's next stage.
