Solution Architect (all genders)

Your creative field

We are looking for two full-time, permanent Solution Architects to start as soon as possible. We're filling this role at two levels. See below where you recognise yourself. We live remote-first, but you have the freedom to choose whether you want to work hybrid or completely on-site due to your proximity to one of our locations.


You open your laptop in the morning and know that today will probably be different from what you planned. Maybe you're in a refinement session and realise halfway through that the proposed solution won't hold up at scale. Maybe a developer asks a question that makes you rethink a concept you thought was finished last week. Some days are structured, some aren't – but you know how to work with both.

This isn't a greenfield. At Contabo Group, two systems run in parallel: a PHP monolith with 15 years in production, grown across multiple teams and generations of decisions and a younger microservice system with a message broker built over the last few years. Together they serve more than 250,000 customers worldwide. You know that a landscape like this has its own logic and that you don't redraw it from scratch, but take the time to understand it before you start changing it.

Your job is to develop this landscape further. That means retiring legacy systems where it makes sense, keeping the architecture clean even when there's business pressure to cut corners, and bringing teams along rather than issuing mandates. You own the solution architecture across software, infrastructure and networking – and you make sure decisions are made transparently, not in a vacuum. If you naturally share what you know, not because it's in the job description but because you understand that bad architecture eventually hits everyone – then this is likely the right place for you. 

What convinces us

Your personality, paired with:  

Must have:
• Architectural knowledge for complex, distributed systems 
• Solid understanding of the hosting domain – you know what happens behind a VPS booking 
• Systems modelling with UML, C4, BPMN, ERD, or FMC (e.g. Drawio, Visio, Mermaid) 
• 5+ years of experience, with 2+ years focused on architecture 
• Fluent in German and English 
 
Should have: 
• Experience with Kubernetes, Ansible, or comparable IaC tools 
• Some or deep experience migrating monolithic systems to microservices 
• Mentoring background 
 
Nice to have: 
• AI tools in everyday development (e.g. Claude Code)

Senior - You own the full architecture responsibility and set the standard for all teams. 

• 7+ years of experience, 2+ in the industry
• Full ownership of architecture & governance
• You define processes and drive them with the team
• Deepexpertisein scaling, resilience, and redundancy
• Proactive mentoring of all engineers

Mid-Level - You grow into architectural responsibility – with real scope and clear support. 

• 5+ years of experience, 2+ years with architecture focus
• Co-design solution architecture with senior support
• Gradually take on governance responsibilities
• Interest in mentoring and knowledge sharing
• Openness to learningnew technologies
