Investigative Reporter, Surveillance Technology
Investigative Reporter, Surveillance Technology
Newdle (Context Press, Inc.) - Hybrid contract role, with opportunity to convert to full-time after 3 months
Contract compensation: $25,000-$31,250 for an initial 3-month term (annualized rate of $100,000-$125,000). Full-time conversion, if applicable, will include equity and benefits.
Newdle is looking for an investigative reporter to uncover how surveillance technology (including license plate readers, facial recognition, cell-site simulators, and similar tools) is reshaping public life in the United States. You'll investigate the tools used by police departments, government agencies, and private companies to identify, follow, profile, and monitor people: facial recognition, license-plate readers, location-data brokers, phone-extraction tools, biometric databases, drones, and related systems.
You'll create original, evidence-driven Newdle investigations - video-led and supported by written reporting, documents, and source material - published under your byline. You'll work with a video editor and Newdle's editorial team to make the reporting clear, rigorous, and compelling.
What you'll do
Develop and report original investigations into surveillance systems, the institutions that deploy them, and the companies that profit from them
File public-records requests and pursue contracts, policies, procurement records, emails, audits, grant applications, and other underlying documents
Build sources across government, law enforcement, civil-liberties groups, affected communities, vendors, and contractors
Track surveillance-company deployments, public spending, data-sharing arrangements, litigation, and policy changes
Read technical, legal, and procurement materials closely enough to understand what a system does, what data it collects, who can access it, and where its use may exceed public claims or oversight
Report, interview, script, and contribute to video investigations, working with a video editor on production as needed
Work with Newdle's editorial team on sourcing, verification, fact-checking, fairness, right of reply, and source protection
What we're looking for
A demonstrated record of original investigative or accountability reporting, with published clips or work samples
Experience covering surveillance, policing, technology, privacy, government, civil liberties, public procurement, or related subjects
Video-journalism experience, including reporting, interviewing, scripting, and working through a production process
Comfort filing and pursuing public-records requests
Technical fluency beyond press-release literacy: able to understand data flows, APIs, device identifiers, biometric matching, cloud services, and networked systems
Strong judgment around sourcing, corroboration, sensitive documents, and fairness
The independence and curiosity to run a demanding beat and pursue long-term investigations
Term and conversion
Initial three-month contract, with possible full-time conversion; investigations are evaluated on rigor and reporting progress, not solely whether a records-driven story closes within 90 days.
A conversion, if offered, is expected to include a base salary in the range of $100,000-$125,000, plus benefits and equity eligibility.
About Newdle
Newdle builds editorial tools and evidence-based reporting for video creators and journalists. We believe public-interest journalism should be fast, clear, and scalable, but never less rigorous.
How to apply
Send a resume, a short note, and three to five relevant work samples to [email protected]. Include at least one example of original investigative reporting and, if applicable, video work with a brief note about your role.
