Job Description:
In support of our growth strategy, AltaLink is looking for a Commercial Development Engineer to join its Policy and Commercial Development team. The selected individual will be responsible for the delivery of various commercial initiatives including the commercial development of emerging technology, data centres and large load, and other customer projects; conducting technical assessments and risk evaluations; administering the Market Participant Choice program; supporting the negotiation of third-party commercial agreements; managing external and government funding applications; and advancing other regulated business development. The successful candidate will also be responsible for developing technical and commercial execution strategies, business cases, and project proposals, and for working with internal and external stakeholders to advance this work.
This position will be of interest to self-driven individuals with practical experience in engineering and project management, and who demonstrate an entrepreneurial mindset, problem-solving skills and a strong commitment to delivering superior customer service. The position will provide a valuable opportunity for developing or enhancing the individual’s commercial and risk management skills.
The position is based out of the Calgary office, and will report to the Manager, Policy and Commercial Development.
Responsibilities:
- Lead cross-functional teams on strategy and business development initiatives, including technical assessment, project scoping, cost estimating, risk evaluation, implementation planning and reporting.
- Collaborate with senior engineers and specialists throughout the company to identify, evaluate and develop regulated business opportunities involving emerging technologies, large load and new projects, and other miscellaneous revenue-generating initiatives.
- Conduct technical feasibility assessments and evaluate operational and project delivery risks associated with third-party revenue contracts such as telecommunications co-locates and customer network service agreements.
- Administer the Market Participant Choice (MPC) process and other ongoing projects, including technical validation coordination, project management, tracking and reporting of key project information and metrics, and identification and implementation of process improvements.
- Work productively with market participants throughout the MPC process, from client onboarding and technical scoping through negotiation and execution of asset transfer agreements and project closeout.
- Liaise with other internal stakeholders, including Customer Service, Legal, Projects, Operations, Asset Management and Finance, to assess and resolve technical, commercial and operational issues associated with MPC or other projects.
- Develop business cases, proposals and applications for external funding opportunities, including government programs for new technology projects.
- Work with Finance and Operations to identify opportunities to improve and expand third-party miscellaneous revenue and support reporting of commercial performance.
- Support internal and regulatory initiatives through technical analysis, risk assessment and implementation planning to achieve positive regulatory outcomes for new projects and initiatives.
- Support the External Affairs team on strategic engagement with local, provincial and federal government departments as required.
- Prepare and present commercial recommendations to senior executives, customers and other external stakeholders.
- Demonstrate key behaviours and meet identified expectations outlined in our four cultural pillars – one team, continuous improvement, customer focus and personal accountability.
- An engineering degree, with minimum five years of technical experience.
- Professional Engineer registered with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or qualifies for immediate registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGA.
- An MBA or experience in financial analysis is not required but would be an asset.
- Proven ability and experience in the above-noted responsibilities.
- Must possess a high degree of knowledge or experience with AltaLink’s and industry technical standards and specifications. Direct experience with facilities acceptance in projects would be considered an asset.
- Demonstrated experience of ongoing interface with customers in a professional and productive manner.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes.
- Must have a positive and collaborative attitude, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge in power systems theory, telecommunications and the Alberta electricity market would be an asset.
- Strong negotiator and problem-solver with a high degree of flexibility.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team to develop high-quality results.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated time management skills to meet deadlines.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic and inclusive environment.
- A commitment to integrity and safety.
