About The Ickworth Hotel & Spa

Reopened following refurbishment!Set within 1,800 acres of National Trust parkland near Bury St Edmunds, The Ickworth Hotel & Spa is a grand Suffolk country house made for family adventures.

Inspired by the Grand Tour, and formerly home to the illustrious Hervey Family, Ickworth House is bursting at the seams with art and treasures.

The history of the Ickworth Estate is intrinsically tied to the Hervey family, who owned the estate for over 500 years. The Herveys gained prominence in British politics with members holding influential positions, including the 1st Earl of Bristol, who supported King George I during the Hanoverian succession.

The iconic Ickworth House, built in the 18th century by the 4th Earl of Bristol (the "Earl-Bishop"), was inspired by his European ‘Grand Tour' and originally intended to house the vast art collection he’d acquired on his travels. Designed in the Italian rotunda style by architect Antonio Asprucci, Ickworth was initially criticised for its style and extravagant scale – entirely in keeping with the Earl-Bishop’s infamously lavish lifestyle. His daughter Elizabeth was equally famous, though more notably for her scandalous private life. She was the mistress of the Duke of Devonshire, and lived with him and his wife Georgiana.

Ickworth House wasn’t finished during the Earl’s lifetime and his art collection was later confiscated by Napoleon’s forces. The impressive collection in the Rotunda today was built by generations of his descendants recreating the collection, and includes important works by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Hogarth, Titian, and Poussin.
