Building smarter customer experiences through technology, data and AI

At DC Thomson, we're transforming how we connect with audiences across our portfolio of trusted media, digital and subscription brands. We're looking for a curious and innovative Software Engineer to join our engineering team and help build the systems, services and experiences that power customer engagement at scale.

This is an exciting opportunity for a full stack engineer who enjoys working across front-end experiences, backend systems and data flows to deliver high-quality products that create measurable business value. You'll play a key role in developing and enhancing our customer communication and personalisation capabilities, with a particular focus on our customer engagement platform, Iterable.

You'll collaborate with engineers, product teams, data specialists and business stakeholders to design, build, test and support solutions that improve how we understand, engage and retain our audiences. As part of a forward-thinking technology team, you'll also have the opportunity to explore and apply emerging AI tools and technologies that are helping shape the future of software engineering and customer experiences.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working across interconnected systems and is excited by the opportunities that AI presents in modern software development.

What you'll be doing

  • Designing, developing and maintaining software applications, services and integrations across our customer engagement ecosystem.
  • Building and enhancing personalised customer experiences and profiling capabilities.
  • Developing and supporting backend systems that manage customer data flows between platforms and services.
  • Working with Iterable to deliver scalable and effective email and customer communication solutions.
  • Collaborating with product, engineering and business teams to understand requirements and deliver valuable technical solutions.
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing and resolving software and system issues.
  • Contributing to engineering best practices, automation, code quality and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participating in code reviews and knowledge-sharing activities across the wider engineering community.
  • Exploring opportunities to leverage AI-powered tools and emerging technologies to improve engineering effectiveness and customer outcomes.

Why join us?

You'll be joining a collaborative engineering team that values curiosity, experimentation and continuous learning. We believe technology, data and AI will play a critical role in shaping the future of our business, and we're looking for engineers who want to be part of that journey.

Whether you're developing new customer experiences, optimising data flows or piloting innovative AI-enabled ways of working, you'll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact across some of Scotland's best-known media and digital brands.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • Commercial experience developing software within modern engineering environments.
  • Strong JavaScript development skills and experience building full stack applications.
  • Experience developing, integrating and maintaining APIs, services and backend systems.
  • Knowledge of software design principles and engineering best practices.
  • Experience working with source control, automated testing and CI/CD approaches.
  • An understanding of secure coding, software quality and operational reliability.
  • Experience troubleshooting and resolving technical issues within complex systems.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience contributing to code reviews, shared codebases and engineering standards.
  • A passion for continuous learning and developing technical expertise.

It would be great if you also have:

  • Experience with Python.
  • Experience working with customer engagement, marketing automation or personalisation platforms.
  • Knowledge of Iterable or similar customer communication platforms.
  • Exposure to cloud-based services and modern engineering tooling.
  • Experience exploring or implementing AI-powered tools within software development workflows.

Qualifications

We welcome applications from candidates with a degree, diploma or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related subject.

We're equally interested in people who have developed their skills through alternative routes and can demonstrate relevant project work, technical capability and hands-on engineering experience.

What we're looking for

Beyond technical skills, we're looking for someone who:

  • Is naturally curious and enjoys learning new technologies.
  • Has a genuine interest in the potential of AI and emerging technologies.
  • Enjoys solving complex problems and working across interconnected systems.
  • Takes ownership of their work and delivers high-quality outcomes.
  • Thrives in collaborative environments and enjoys sharing knowledge with others.

To apply for this role, please follow our online application process and submit a CV and cover letter.
