The Role
We’re looking for an Embedded Linux / Kernel Engineer to strengthen the software platform that runs on Abi and deepen our capability in one of the most foundational parts of the stack.
You’ll join the team responsible for the platform software that runs on Abi, including firmware and other onboard software. The team works across the hardware/software boundary to make the robot reliable, deployable, and easier to develop, while partnering closely with electrical, autonomy, AI, and product engineering on real-world robotic systems.You’ll own the Linux platform that runs on our Jetson-based robots, from NixOS and kernel configuration through device bring-up and hardware integration. You’ll improve the provisioning and flashing tools that turn a new Jetson into a working robot, make OTA and platform upgrades safer and easier to test, and debug failures across boot, networking and Wi-Fi, cameras, storage, and other peripherals. You’ll also help define the compute and hardware/software interfaces for next-generation robots, and build the diagnostics, testing, and recovery paths needed to keep them reliable in the field.
You’ll help us make Abi easier to develop, deploy, debug, and scale. That means getting hands-on with real hardware, tracking down tricky issues across the stack, improving our platform foundations, and building cleaner, more reliable interfaces for the rest of engineering.
This is a strong fit for someone who likes working close to the metal, enjoys debugging real systems, and wants ownership in a robotics product where Linux platform work directly affects reliability, manufacturing, deployment, and customer outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and improve the Linux platform that powers Abi, including OS-level behaviour, kernel-adjacent integration points, hardware interfaces, and software deployment.
- Investigate and resolve low-level system issues across boot, provisioning, upgrades, peripherals, networking, storage, and device stability.
- Support bring-up and integration of embedded hardware and compute platforms, including working across device trees, drivers, boot configuration, vendor platform constraints, and the definition of clean interfaces and platform expectations for next-generation robots where required.
- Improve the robustness and usability of provisioning, flashing, and deployment flows for engineers, manufacturing, and field operations.
- Work closely with firmware, electrical, autonomy, AI, and product engineering teams to define clean interfaces between hardware and software.
- Contribute to OS and platform upgrade work, including kernel, JetPack, ROS, and related platform dependencies.
- Build or improve tooling, automation, logging, and diagnostics that make low-level issues easier to detect, reproduce, and fix, whether working in virtualised development environments or on physical robot hardware.
- Support validation and testing of platform changes on real robots, including regression testing and hardware-in-the-loop style workflows where useful.
- Produce clear technical documentation for setup, deployment, debugging, and recovery procedures so the team can operate more independently.
- Raise the team’s depth in embedded Linux and platform engineering through reviews, pairing, and pragmatic knowledge-sharing.
Your First 3 Months at Andromeda
This is an indicative onboarding and impact plan for the first three months in the role. Actual priorities may shift based on business needs and project timelines.
First 30 days
- Complete onboarding and induction, including core systems, tools, and ways of working.
- Deeply understand Abi’s software and hardware architecture, with particular focus on the Linux platform, provisioning flows, update mechanisms, and hardware/software boundaries.
- Shadow key teammates and review the most important current pain points across kernel/platform work, deployment workflows, and active hardware integration efforts.
- Set up the development environment across both virtual machines and physical hardware targets, and begin making small, low-risk fixes or improvements to platform or tooling issues.
- Build context on current roadmap items that touch the platform layer, such as OS upgrades, reliability work, new hardware integration, and interface/platform definition work for next-generation robots.
Days 31–60
- Take ownership of one meaningful platform workstream, such as a provisioning, upgrade, hardware integration, or system reliability improvement.
- Begin independently debugging and resolving low-level issues on real robots and dev hardware.
- Identify quick wins that reduce friction for other engineers working with Abi’s Linux platform.
- Collaborate with adjacent teams to improve at least one hardware/software interface or operational workflow, and contribute to defining cleaner platform boundaries for next-generation robot development.
- Contribute to platform testing, validation, and rollout planning for changes that affect system stability.
Days 61–90
- Become a go-to engineer for a meaningful part of Abi’s Linux and embedded platform.
- Deliver a visible improvement in at least one of reliability, deployment speed, provisioning quality, observability, or upgrade safety.
- Propose a short platform roadmap for the next 3–6 months, based on concrete technical debt, reliability risks, and scaling needs.
- Document and standardise key procedures so fewer platform tasks depend on tribal knowledge.
- Help level up the broader robotics software team’s understanding of embedded Linux and system-level debugging.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3–6 years of relevant experience in embedded Linux, systems programming, robotics software, platform software, or a closely related area.
- Strong Linux fundamentals, including comfort debugging system behaviour across userspace, services, device interfaces, and OS configuration.
- Experience working close to hardware on embedded or robotics systems.
- Strong programming skills in C, C++, Rust, or Python, with the ability to work effectively in at least one systems-level language.
- Experience debugging real-world issues using logs, shell tools, hardware documentation, schematics, datasheets, and disciplined root-cause investigation.
- Familiarity with one or more of the following areas: kernel drivers, boot processes, device trees, BSPs, networking, storage, update systems, or hardware interface protocols.
- Strong ownership and execution skills in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with engineers from firmware, electrical, autonomy, AI, and product teams.
- Clear technical communication and documentation habits.
Bonus Points
- Experience with Linux kernel development, kernel module work, or upstream/open-source Linux contributions.
- Experience with embedded ARM platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi, or similar systems.
- Experience with robotics or other reliability-critical embedded products.
- Experience with provisioning, OTA updates, secure boot, disk encryption, rollback, or recovery workflows.
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, manufacturing support tools, or field diagnostics.
- Experience with Nix or NixOS, or strong interest in learning it.
- Familiarity with ROS/ROS2 or adjacent robotics tooling.
- Experience improving internal developer tooling for low-level or embedded teams.
- Experience using systemd to configure, operate, and debug services on embedded Linux systems, including boot ordering, dependencies, logs, and recovery behaviour
