<h3><strong>Engineering at Monzo</strong></h3>
<p>Monzo has successfully launched in Ireland and is expanding across Europe. We're now entering the next phase of our journey: building and scaling a multi-market European bank.</p>
<p>The EU Engineering organisation sits at the centre of that ambition. We are responsible for helping Monzo launch, grow and operate across Europe, navigating everything from product-market fit and customer growth to regulatory requirements, localisation and operational scale.</p>
<p>Unlike most engineering organisations at Monzo, EU does not own a single product area. We work horizontally across the company, partnering with teams across Payments, Core Banking, Growth, Wealth, Customer Operations, Fincrime, Platform and many others to bring Monzo's products to new markets and deliver great customer experiences locally.</p>
<p>As an Engineering Director, you'll lead a distributed engineering organisation across the UK, Spain and remote locations. You'll partner closely with Product, Design, Data, Operations, Risk, Compliance and executive stakeholders to solve complex problems that span organisational boundaries.</p>
<p>Success in this role comes through influence, relationships and organisational leadership as much as execution. You'll need to build alignment across a wide range of teams, create clarity in ambiguity, and help Monzo discover what works in new markets while establishing the foundations that allow us to scale across Europe.</p>
<p>This is one of Monzo's most strategically important areas and a unique opportunity to help build a European bank from the ground up.</p>
<p><strong>What you’ll work on</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Lead a distributed engineering organisation spanning multiple squads, markets and countries.</li>
<li>Build and develop Engineering Managers, Senior Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders.</li>
<li>Partner with Product, Design, Data, Research, Operations, Risk and Compliance leaders to define and execute Monzo's European strategy.</li>
<li>Drive alignment and execution across numerous collectives to ensure Europe receives the capabilities it needs to succeed.</li>
<li>Shape how Monzo approaches market expansion, localisation, regulatory requirements and multi-market product development.</li>
<li>Influence priorities and outcomes across teams that do not directly report to you.</li>
<li>Create clarity and momentum in highly ambiguous problem spaces where ownership and solutions are not always obvious.</li>
<li>Design and evolve organisational structures, operating models and planning processes that allow Monzo to scale effectively across Europe.</li>
<li>Help identify and validate product-market fit in new markets while balancing short-term delivery and long-term strategic investments.</li>
<li>Partner closely with executive leadership to shape the future of Monzo's European business.</li>
</ul>
<h3><strong>You should apply if</strong></h3>

<li>You have experience leading large engineering organisations through other leaders, including Engineering Managers, Senior Engineering Managers and senior individual contributors.</li>
<li>You have successfully operated in highly complex organisations where outcomes depend on collaboration across many teams and functions.</li>
<li>You are exceptional at building relationships and influencing without direct authority.</li>
<li>You can navigate ambiguity and create clarity where goals, ownership or priorities are not yet fully defined.</li>
<li>You have experience scaling organisations through periods of rapid growth, organisational change or market expansion.</li>
<li>You enjoy solving organisational and business problems, not just technical ones.You can balance strategy and execution, translating ambitious goals into tangible outcomes.</li>
<li>You are comfortable making decisions in environments where there is rarely a perfect answer.</li>
<li>You have a strong track record of building high-performing leadership teams and developing future leaders.</li>
<li>You are energised by the challenge of building something new and helping shape the future of Monzo's international expansion.</li>

<h3><strong>The interview process</strong></h3>
<p>After an informal ~30 min recruiter call our interview process involves 2 main stages: </p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Initial Call (1 hour)</strong> You'll meet with one of our senior engineering leaders. They'll ask you about your previous experience, in particular people leadership, product delivery and technical leadership. They’ll ask example based questions (‘Tell me about a time when…’)</li>
<li><strong>Loop Stage</strong> - This is one stage with 4 interviews (totalling 4 hours) split between a collaboration with one of our engineers on a technical exercise, as well as execution and leadership interviews.</li>
</ol>
<p>At all stages we’ll create space for you to ask as many questions as you have, you’re interviewing us as well!</p>
<p>Our average process takes around 3-4 weeks but we will always work around your availability. <p>Our main tech hub is in London, but our engineers live everywhere in the UK— from Brighton to the Western Isles. </p>
<p>We value meeting in person but there’s no pressure to come into the office, even if you're nearby. We believe you'll do your best work if you are where you want to be. If you live outside of London and we ask you to come into the office, Monzo will support you with the costs. ✨</p>
<p>Our offices are naturally social, especially Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, which happen to line up with our twice-weekly Monzo lunches & treat Thursdays 🍽️. Teams also schedule time together often for work and play – in or around the office, or online.</p>
