Provisional Fellow positions are available at NETS for up to 24 months commencing in the 2027 Clinical Year, from 01 February 2027.
‘NETS', The Newborn & paediatric Emergency Transport Service, is a statewide service of NSW Health; hosted by The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. It is the only service of its kind in Australia; providing expert clinical advice, clinical co-ordination, emergency treatment and stabilisation and inter-hospital transport for very sick or injured babies and children up to the age of 16 years. NETS operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our teams travel via road, rotary and fixed wing. Of some 6,785 calls received per year, 3,994 are transported by NETS teams by road or air. The Provisional Fellow role is a clinical role at NETS, based at the state headquarters at Bankstown Aerodrome. The Provisional Fellow role is suitable for Advanced Trainees in neonatology, paediatric emergency medicine, paediatric intensive care or anaesthesia who wish to learn and gain skill in retrieval medicine. If undertaken for 12 months fulltime, the Provisional Fellow role provides trainees nearing the end of their training an opportunity to develop skills important for a consultant role within the spheres of clinical care, communication, education and quality assurance as well as research with support from the team consultants and other health care professionals.
The Provisional Fellow is responsible for the delivery of the highest quality care to the neonatal and paediatric patient and their family. Referring hospitals expect knowledge, skills and competencies which may exceed those available in the referring hospital. A high level of competency in assessment, treatment and procedural skills (such as cannulation, high level airway skills, chest tube thoracostomy, central line placement) is expected prior to employment. The care that is delivered should be individual and continually reviewed. The Provisional Fellow should be an active clinical resource contributing towards continuing education for themselves and their peers.

Selection Criteria:
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
- Minimum of 5 years post graduate clinical experience and an advanced trainee in relevant specialty, which could include paediatrics, neonatology, anaesthetics, paediatric intensive care and paediatric emergency medicine
- Minimum of 12 months of critical care experience, including 6 months in paediatric or neonatal intensive care or paediatric anaesthetics or retrieval services in Australia or similar Health Care Service
- Demonstrated recent competency to independently manage the deteriorating or seriously unwell patient in Australia or similar Health Care Service utilising excellent time management, problem solving skills, clinical skills, judgement and expertise
- Demonstrated competency in advanced airway skills – please detail neonatal and paediatric intubation experience
- Able to work and function in the NETS operational environment as a NETS retrieval trainee, fulfilling the scope of this role. Ability to demonstrate a level of physical fitness to complete relevant vehicle, rotary wing and fixed wing training including Emergency egress and Sea Survival training. A fitness test is required as a condition of appointment and employment
- Have superior verbal and written communication skills
- APLS (or equivalent)
