
Senior Legal Counsel (Commercial), 8 years' PQE - AKL

This permanent, full-time, position is based in South Auckland and sits within a large public sector organisation. You will join a well-established legal team and play a key role in supporting high-value commercial activity and organisational initiatives.

This position involves providing both strategic and operational legal advice across a broad regional portfolio. You will work closely with internal teams, senior leaders and external advisors to support a wide range of commercial matters, critical services and infrastructure projects.
The role offers exposure to varied and often complex work, including drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements such as procurement documentation, construction and property contracts, commissioning agreements, and other arrangements. You will advise on procurement processes, risk and compliance requirements. You will support contract negotiations, and you will manage dispute resolution, where required.
In addition, you will play a key role in partnering with stakeholders on significant projects and initiatives, contributing to policy and governance work, and providing clear, practical legal guidance across the business. This is a dynamic role offering exposure to multiple workstreams, well suited to someone who enjoys variety, responsibility and working at pace.

You will be a confident and commercially astute lawyer who is comfortable operating at a senior level and engaging with a broad range of stakeholders.
To be successful, you will bring:
- A Bachelor of Laws and a current practising certificate (or eligibility to get one)
- At least 8 years’ post-qualification experience, with strong experience in commercial law, including contract law, procurement and general commercial matters
- The ability to provide clear, pragmatic and solutions-focused legal advice and to exercise sound judgment
- Excellent communication skills and an aptitude for building trusted working relationships
- A proactive and resilient approach, with the capacity to work autonomously and to manage competing priorities within a busy environment
