
Technical Analyst
At the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) | Te Tira Tiaki, our mission is to protect and enhance Aotearoa New Zealand’s security and wellbeing. We provide Signals Intelligence and Cyber Security and resilience to organisations of national significance to successfully navigate in an unpredictable world. Timely, insightful intelligence is essential to protecting New Zealand’s sovereignty, prosperity, and safety. Join the GCSB as a Technical Analyst (Level 1, 2, or 3) in a team that sits at the intersection of software development and analysis, and become a vital part of transforming intelligence data into actionable insights. Supporting our missions to counter terrorism and organised crime, you will work with unique datasets, drive analytical capability development, and overcome technical challenges. You’ll be a member of a close-knit, collaborative team integrated with the teams we support, experiencing the full scope of our mission and providing analytic support that is essential to GCSB meeting operational demands. This role directly contributes to the security of New Zealand while pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation.
Role Overview
This vacancy has become available due to an expansion of the team and is a reflection of the importance of the work we undertake. The role is broad and diversified, encompassing; problem solving, complex analysis, software engineering, data science, and researching emerging technology. You will need to be able to start your career with us in Wellington, but there may be the opportunity for relocation to Auckland in future years.
Responsibilities
Our work encompasses: * Software development: Develop and maintain solutions to support intelligence missions. * Technology Research: Stay updated with the latest advancements in technology relevant to our work. * Complex Analysis: Perform and automate complex analysis across a wide range of datasets. * Telecommunications and Infrastructure: Leverage expertise in these areas to drive analysis outcomes. * Data Insights: Glean insights from disparate data sets, identifying trends, changes, and summarising current information. * Problem Solving: Apply structured problem-solving techniques to analyse complex and open-ended questions, providing novel insights. * Engagement: Proactive engagement across our mission to understand requirements and present on findings in domestic and international forums. Attributes we are specifically interested in; * High motivation, curiosity, and an eagerness to learn * Have a flair for creativity and innovation in the development of solutions * Have an interest in Counter Terrorism and/or countering Organised Crime * Ability to quickly research emerging technologies relevant to our missions * Capacity for practical problem-solving, particularly against novel problems * Have a degree in a field relevant to Technical Analysis, examples include: Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics or similar, OR relevant work experience in Technical Analysis or Engineering roles. You will be working with a diverse team of dedicated people who enjoy the unique challenges that come with working in the Intelligence Directorate – you cannot do this type of work anywhere else.

Appointing range: * Level 1: $73,684 – $78,596 * Level 2: $103,009 – $109,876 * Level 3: $120,359 – $128,383 Before you apply
Working within our unique environment means we have to ensure you're eligible for employment.
You must: * Have been a New Zealand Citizen for at least 10 years OR
Hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and ideally have been a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years * Be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance * Ordinarily, this means you'll have a 15 year checkable background in countries NZSIS Vetting can make meaningful and reliable checks.
