Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Pūkenga - Lecturer in Landscape Architecture to join Te Wāhanga Waihanga-Hoahoa - Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation team on a permanent, full-time contract.

Based at our Te Aro Campus and reporting to the Head of the School of Architecture, this role offers opportunities for flexible working arrangements alongside a vibrant, design-led academic environment. The Landscape Architecture programme is committed to the creative planning and design of resilient landscapes through excellence in teaching, research, and practice.

We are seeking a talented academic and/or practitioner whose work demonstrates innovative approaches to addressing the environmental, cultural, and social challenges shaping contemporary built and natural environments. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from Māori and Pasifika candidates, and from Registered Landscape Architects.

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate landscape architecture programmes.
  • Contribute to technology and construction teaching, design studio teaching, curriculum development, and graduate student supervision.
  • Develop and maintain an active programme of research, scholarship, and/or professional practice.
  • Contribute to teaching and research in areas such as planting design, landscape design, representation, construction and landform, landscape history and theory, urban design, and emerging digital technologies.
  • Build collaborative relationships across the profession, industry, communities, and iwi partners.
  • Contribute to the academic leadership and service activities of the School and University.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You are a creative and forward-thinking landscape architect, educator, and/or researcher who is passionate about advancing the discipline through innovative teaching, scholarship, and practice. You thrive in collaborative and interdisciplinary environments and are committed to preparing students to address the complex challenges facing landscapes in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.

Key requirements:

  • A completed PhD in a relevant field, or other relevant qualifications and experience commensurate with the role.
  • Expertise in contemporary landscape architectural design, representation, and spatial analysis, including digital and emerging technologies such as AI, AR/VR, and advanced visualisation platforms.
  • Demonstrated capability in teaching, research, and/or professional practice, with evidence of innovation and impact.
  • Ability to teach across one or more priority areas, including planting design, construction and landform, landscape history and theory, urban design, cultural landscapes, or placemaking.
  • Experience working with Māori partners and/or Indigenous communities, and a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Mātauranga Māori in teaching, research, and practice.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.
