This is the top position in The Post and Courier's Pee Dee newsroom and is responsible for daily news gathering across all topic areas. This person manages a fast-moving, digital newsroom of two reporters and two interns in cooperation with our partners at Francis Marion University. The right person must be a strong presence in the community and will be a player-coach who contributes to the daily and enterprise news report.RESPONSIBILITIES:Deep understanding of digital media and a start-up mentality, work ethic and energy. A competitive spirit will be necessary as this digital-only newsroom takes on more traditional competitors in the market. This is a job for a self-starter who relishes the fast pace of digital news and thrives under the pressure of lofty goals and expectations.Must be an accomplished and experienced editor and/or digital journalist. Preference will be given to those with a background managing toward specific digital audience goals, including paid digital subscribers. Must demonstrate an ability to function in a stressful, fast-moving and ever-changing environment. Must be proficient with grammar, AP style and libel law.The Managing Editor must be deeply involved in the community, attending key community events and gatherings and building meaningful relationships with key stakeholders. They must also be prepare to ask all of their employees to do the same. The Managing Editor is responsible for ensuring writing and reporting is of the highest quality. The ability to adapt to change and additional duties as assigned is required.Requirements, minimum education level, and experience:Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or related field10 or more years of demonstrated journalism experienceStrong communication and interpersonal skills associated with developing trusting relationships and maintaining a high level of confidentialityStrong organization and prioritization skills with excellent follow throughKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:Digital skills: Can lead a team to meet the demands of a digital-only news operation through a focus on key quantitative and qualitative metrics.Accuracy and ethics: Produces work that is accurate in fact, tone and implication. Understands and follows libel law and the rules governing plagiarism.Communication: Works well with editors and reporters across disciplines. Discusses original and assigned story ideas. Participates in brainstorming sessions to develop detailed and realistic story ideas.Organizational skills: Develops a systematic approach to managing the newsroom. Understands how to set individual and small team goals to drive overall company performance.Community involvement: Understands and demonstrates that deep community involvement is a key to success.Professional development: Seeks out and participates in training opportunities to improve skills.Flexibility: Reacts to change productively and handles other duties as assigned.Physical Requirement: Close eye work, continuous sitting, constant walking, standing, light to moderate lifting 15-30 pounds (per safety policy).The Post and Courier is an equal opportunity employer.
