The University of Otago, Christchurch is a research-intensive campus of the University of Otago and is based at the Christchurch Hospital. Our campus is the base for medical and postgraduate health education and health research in Christchurch. In 2022 campus-based researchers commenced research contracts worth $21m. The total awarded to the Christchurch campus for the 2018 PBRF round was approx. $4.2million.
The campus has a 1000-strong student community that includes about 330 medical students and approximately 700 students completing allied health programs including nursing and physiotherapy and a range of programmes up to PhD level.
The Department of Medicine at the University of Otago, Christchurch has a mission to improve the lives of people in New Zealand through health education and research. The Department hosts some of the most productive researchers in New Zealand with strengths in heart health, brain research and musculoskeletal medicine. The Department houses over 100 academic researchers, many of whom have clinical roles in the Canterbury District Health Board.
The role | Te mahi
This is a research-funded position to coordinate and support clinical breathlessness research project conducted by the Department of Medicine, University of Otago, based at Hospice Southland.
The role will assist with:
• Participant recruitment.
• Study coordination.
• Data collection.
• Ethics processes.
• Stakeholder engagement.
• Supporting research that aims to improve the quality of life and healthcare experiences of people living with breathlessness.
The position will help develop and strengthen research capability within Hospice Southland and the wider Southland health community.
Your skills and experience | Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
We are looking for a Registered Nurse with a current Annual Practising Certificate who has strong communication and interpersonal skills with excellent organisational and administrative skills. Previous research experience would be an advantage, as well as knowledge of research ethics and governance processes, however, not essential.
Additional skills\:
• Ability to work independently in a rural and community setting.
• Experience using electronic health records and Microsoft Office.
• Commitment to culturally safe practice and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.
• Experience with databases.
• Interest in palliative care, supportive care, chronic disease, or health services research.
• Experience working with community and rural health services.

This is a variable hours (6 to 20 hours per week) fixed term (18 months) position, based at Hospice Southland in Waihōpai, Invercargill.
The appointment range for this position is $84,147 to $106,319.
