The Role

As Environmental Health & Safety Lead, you will be responsible for leading the EHS programme on an assigned project in Europe.

This is a site-facing role where you will work closely with the Project Manager, site teams, subcontractors, client representatives and the Regional EHS Manager to ensure strong safety performance, legal compliance, effective risk management and continuous improvement across the project.

You will act as both a compliance lead and a practical safety coach, supporting the project team in maintaining safe systems of work, meeting EHS requirements, and driving a proactive safety culture on site.

This role would suit an experienced EHS professional who is confident working in a fast-paced construction environment and who can provide visible, practical and credible safety leadership.

Key Responsibilities

As Environmental Health & Safety Lead, you will:

  • Lead the implementation of Designer Group’s EHS management systems on site.
  • Support compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, client requirements and internal standards.
  • Promote a strong, proactive safety culture across the project.
  • Support PSCS requirements, where applicable.
  • Develop, manage and maintain project-specific health and safety plans, safety files and EHS documentation.
  • Lead and attend project EHS coordination meetings.
  • Carry out regular site inspections, audits and compliance reviews.
  • Review and support the approval of RAMS, SOPs, project execution plans and dynamic risk assessments.
  • Monitor training compliance, including Safe Pass, CSCS and other project or country-specific requirements.
  • Coordinate and monitor safety arrangements across site personnel, subcontractors and project stakeholders.
  • Support incident investigations, after-action reviews and corrective action tracking.
  • Ensure audit and inspection findings are logged, assigned and closed out through the relevant digital platform.
  • Prepare EHS reports and support KPI reporting.
  • Work closely with project teams, management, subcontractors and client representatives.
  • Support health, wellbeing and wider EHS initiatives across the project.
  • Represent Designer Group professionally during audits, inspections and client engagements.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and support practical safety solutions on site.
  • Ensure project EHS training needs are identified and supported in line with project requirements.
  • Collaborate with the wider EHS function to maintain consistent standards across Designer Group projects.

We are looking for an experienced EHS professional with strong construction safety experience and the ability to influence safe behaviours on site.

You should have:

  • 6+ years’ experience in a similar EHS, HSE, Health & Safety or Safety Lead role.
  • Previous experience within the construction industry.
  • Experience working in site-based, project delivery environments.
  • A recognised third-level qualification in Environmental Health & Safety or a related discipline.
  • Relevant EHS accreditations or certifications, such as IOSH or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Experience carrying out site audits, inspections and risk reviews.
  • Experience reviewing RAMS, method statements, SOPs, project execution plans and risk assessments.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Good literacy, numeracy and IT skills.
  • Experience using digital construction or EHS platforms such as Procore, EIDA, Kianda or similar.
  • Fluent English language skills.
  • A full clean driving licence.

Desirable Experience

The following would be advantageous:

  • Previous experience working on construction projects in mainland Europe.
  • Experience within M&E, MEP, building services or data centre construction.
  • Experience working with international project teams.
  • Experience supporting contractor and subcontractor safety management.
  • Knowledge European construction safety requirements.
  • Experience working on large-scale, fast-paced construction projects.

What Will Help You Succeed

You will be successful in this role if you can:

  • Make informed decisions and provide practical safety recommendations.
  • Build strong working relationships with project teams, subcontractors and client representatives.
  • Stay organised across day-to-day EHS planning, coordination and execution.
  • Use data, audits, inspections and site observations to drive improvement.
  • Communicate clearly with site teams and senior stakeholders.
  • Work confidently in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Balance compliance requirements with practical, site-based problem solving.
  • Challenge unsafe behaviours in a professional and constructive way.
  • Represent Designer Group to a high standard on site.

At Designer Group, safety is not a box-ticking exercise. It is central to how we plan, manage and deliver our work.

You will be joining a growing international engineering business with a strong project pipeline and a clear commitment to developing its people.

We offer:

  • The opportunity to work on major international construction projects.
  • Exposure to high-value, technically complex M&E environments.
  • A supportive project and EHS leadership structure.
  • Career development and continuous professional development opportunities.
  • The chance to work with leading clients and experienced project teams.
  • A collaborative culture built around safety, trust, respect and delivery.
