Solution Engineer - Network
Solutions Engineer – Networking
Shoreham-by-Sea
Up to £40,000 + Car Allowance
(Internal Job Level Reference: Senior Associate)
Focus Group is a £300m-revenue, 1,400-person technology services company backed by Hg Capital. Following our $1bn valuation in 2024, we're scaling rapidly and investing in AI to transform how we operate and how we serve our 30,000 SME customers. As we continue to expand our portfolio through acquisition and organic growth, we're committed to setting new industry standards in managed service excellence.
About the role
We're looking for a Solutions Engineer to join our networking team, delivering remote and on-site support, infrastructure deployments and technical consultancy for customers across a range of industries. You'll be recognised as a subject matter expert in networking, leading projects in your specialism and helping drive best practice and technical excellence across the wider team.
This is a hands-on, customer-facing role for someone who enjoys getting into the detail of an infrastructure project – from scoping and design through to hands-on delivery and hand-over – while also having the chance to mentor others and shape how the team works.
What you'll be doing
Technical delivery
- Delivering high-quality installation, configuration and maintenance of customer infrastructure, including SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network), switching, firewalls, wireless, SSE/SASE (Secure Service Edge/Secure Access Service Edge) and other network devices
- Acting as an escalation point for complex technical faults within your area of specialism
- Troubleshooting and resolving advanced infrastructure issues across networking estates
- Designing, implementing and migrating enterprise network solutions including LAN/WAN, SD-WAN, VLANs, firewalls and secure wireless, across vendors such as Meraki, Fortinet and Cisco
Project leadership
- Leading the delivery of projects with a primary focus on networking – including network refreshes, LAN/WAN and SD-WAN rollouts, and firewall and wireless deployments – while also contributing to cloud migrations, infrastructure deployments and security implementations
- Managing technical workstreams within larger programmes, typically owning the network workstream while coordinating with project managers, consultants and third-party vendors
- Attending and contributing to customer calls for technical scoping, solution design and implementation planning
- Undertaking and documenting site surveys, technical audits and readiness assessments
- Supporting new customer onboarding and technology transitions, ensuring a smooth handover to service operations
Documentation and standards
- Auditing and documenting client infrastructure to a high standard, maintaining accurate configuration records
- Developing and maintaining best-practice documentation, knowledge base articles and technical runbooks for your specialist area
- Providing detailed solution designs and technical proposals to meet customer requirements
Collaboration and development
- Mentoring and supporting other engineers on complex project deliveries and technical escalations
- Staying current with industry developments, emerging technologies and vendor certifications relevant to your specialism
- Working closely with account management, pre-sales and service teams to ensure a seamless customer experience
What you'll bring
- Proven experience in a support, infrastructure or solutions delivery role
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Strong troubleshooting methodology and analytical problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and documentation standards
- Punctual and responsible, with excellent time management
- Ability to work independently and as part of a project team
- Flexibility to adjust working hours or travel for project requirements
- A full valid UK driving licence
- A strong desire to grow your technical knowledge and achieve industry certifications
- Demonstrable expertise in networking: VLANs, routing and switching, firewalls, WAN/SD-WAN, and wireless design and deployment (Meraki, Cisco, Fortinet)
Nice to have
- Experience working in an IT Managed Service Provider (MSP) environment
- Vendor certifications in networking (Meraki, Cisco, Fortinet) or security platforms
- Experience with scripting and automation (PowerShell, Azure Automation)
- Familiarity with ITIL frameworks and service management principles
- Experience with documentation platforms (IT Glue, Hudu or similar)
Where this role can take you
This role is a genuine springboard. Depending on where your interests lie, future paths from here include Team Manager, Technical Consultant, or Technical Pre-Sales Consultant – and we'll support you with certifications and development along the way.
Why Focus Group
You'll be joining a business that provides essential technology so our customers can focus on growing theirs – and we bring the same mindset to how we support our people. You'll get exposure to real, varied networking projects across different customers and industries, work alongside experienced engineers and architects, and have a clear route to progress your career, whether that's deeper into technical specialism, into leadership, or into pre-sales.
We offer a competitive salary of up to £40,000, plus a car allowance to reflect the travel involved in the role.
If you're a networking specialist who enjoys variety, ownership, and the chance to make your mark on a growing team, we'd love to hear from you.
