The Opportunity:
Liberty Mutual Canada is seeking a Surety Executive Underwriter for our National Accounts’ team to join our Toronto office. In this role, you will be responsible for marketing, underwriting, and servicing a portfolio of clients across Canada.
Leveraging your strong relationship-building skills, you will develop and maintain long-term partnerships with brokers and clients, focusing on sustainable growth rather than transactional sales. You will apply your financial and business acumen to conduct in-depth credit underwriting, perform financial and risk analysis, and make informed decisions on both new and existing accounts.
This is an excellent opportunity for a driven, experienced surety professional looking to advance their career with a leading global surety provider that prioritizes its people and clients.
Liberty Mutual Surety, a business unit of Liberty Mutual Insurance, is the largest global Surety provider. Operating in over 60 countries through a network of subsidiaries and fronting relationships, we support construction firms, manufacturers, suppliers, and commercial enterprises. We are committed to building mutually profitable relationships through smart business solutions, ease of doing business, and consistent, responsive service. We also take pride in fostering a diverse workforce and supporting the communities we serve worldwide.
Core Responsibilities:
- Serve as a trusted advisor to clients and brokers by providing strategic underwriting guidance, reviewing account performance, and identifying opportunities to enhance portfolio profitability and growth.
- Develop, manage, and grow a diversified surety portfolio while building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, brokers, and key industry stakeholders.
- Execute portfolio growth strategies aligned with underwriting appetite, business objectives, regulatory requirements, and established underwriting guidelines.
- Conduct comprehensive financial analysis of private and public organizations, including evaluation of financial statements, cash flow, interim reporting, and work-in-progress schedules to assess risk, establish underwriting positions, and monitor emerging trends.
- Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies, account action plans, and exit strategies for accounts demonstrating adverse financial or operational performance.
- Analyze risk exposures and structure appropriate surety solutions, terms, conditions, and capacity based on financial strength, operational performance, industry trends, and economic conditions.
- Manage an assigned book of business by evaluating quantitative and qualitative risk factors to ensure portfolio quality, profitability, and long-term sustainability.
- Exercise sound underwriting judgment and delegated authority while ensuring compliance with corporate guidelines, risk management standards, and underwriting governance requirements.
- Investigate and resolve complex underwriting, accounting, and operational issues in accordance with Liberty Mutual Surety's underwriting philosophy, policies, and procedures.
- Lead and participate in client, broker, prospect, and industry meetings to provide underwriting expertise, strengthen market presence, and support business development efforts.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners, including underwriting, claims, finance, legal, and distribution teams, to deliver exceptional client service and achieve business objectives.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, internal policies, and the Underwriting Controls Framework while maintaining the highest standards of underwriting integrity.
- Contribute to account planning, relationship management, cross-selling initiatives, strategic projects, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment by partnering across functions and regions to support organizational goals.
- Travel - as required to support business objectives, including client meetings, conferences, and company events.
What the Ideal Candidate Will Bring:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and Surety underwriting experience.
- 7+ years of progressive Surety underwriting experience, including strong Contract Surety expertise and a proven ability to manage complex risks and portfolios.
- Advanced financial analysis and risk assessment skills, including the ability to evaluate financial statements, credit profiles, cash flow, and industry trends to make sound underwriting decisions.
- Demonstrated success in business development, broker and client relationship management, and profitable portfolio growth.
- Strong negotiation, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to influence and build credibility with clients, brokers, and senior stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, coupled with strong knowledge of economic, financial, and market conditions.
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while working both independently and collaboratively.
- Strong understanding of technical Surety underwriting principles, risk management practices, and regulatory requirements.
