Your Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and proactive Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer with an Electrical Bias to join our Engineering and Maintenance Team.
This is a weekend-critical role, with core working hours of Thursday to Monday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, providing essential engineering and maintenance support during periods when the site has limited maintenance coverage. The position is designed to ensure continuity of operations, safe management of out-of-hours activities, and effective oversight of contractors during weekends.
The role involves independent working, particularly on Saturdays and Sundays, where you will act as the primary on-site engineering representative. Weekend responsibilities will focus on the completion of planned maintenance activities, reactive requests from end users and contractor management.
The successful candidate will possess strong electrical engineering skills combined with a broad understanding of mechanical and building services systems. You will be responsible for maintaining laboratories, office environments, and associated building infrastructure, ensuring all systems remain safe, compliant, and fully operational.
This role requires a self-motivated individual who can make informed decisions, managing priorities independently, and maintaining high standards of safety and service delivery with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
Weekend Support
- Provide full engineering coverage during weekends as part of the site's maintenance strategy.
- Manage and supervise contractors undertaking planned works, maintenance activities, equipment servicing, and project works outside the normal working week.
- Oversee permit-to-work processes and ensure all contractor activities comply with site health, safety, and environmental requirements.
- Support and coordinate weekend activities to minimise disruption to operational and scientific functions.
- Ensure effective communication and handover of weekend activities to the wider maintenance team.
Maintenance and Engineering
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance across electrical, mechanical, and building services systems.
- Diagnose faults and undertake repairs to electrical systems, building infrastructure, plant, equipment, and laboratory facilities.
- Maintain critical site services to ensure maximum reliability, operational performance, and compliance.
- Assist with the installation, commissioning, modification, and improvement of site equipment and systems.
- Support site improvement initiatives and continuous improvement projects.
- Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities, including equipment inspections, repairs, and maintenance schedules.
- Collaborate with other teams and departments to identify maintenance needs and improve operational efficiency.
Compliance and Safety
- Ensure all maintenance activities are undertaken in accordance with current legislation, industry standards, site procedures, and health and safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspections, statutory compliance documentation, and contractor reports.
- Promote and maintain a safe working environment through proactive risk assessment and hazard identification.
- Support audits, inspections, and compliance activities as required.
Emergency Response
- Participate in the on-call rota and provide emergency out-of-hours support when required.
- Be capable of attending site within one hour when on call.
- Respond effectively to critical equipment failures, building issues, and emergency situations.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Recognised qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND, or equivalent).
- Strong electrical fault-finding, maintenance, and troubleshooting experience.
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification.
- Broad knowledge of mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and building services systems.
- Experience working within commercial, scientific, laboratory, pharmaceutical, healthcare, or high-specification building environments.
- Ability to work independently and confidently on your own or as part of a team.
- Experience managing contractors and overseeing permit-to-work activities.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple tasks.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- High attention to detail and commitment to safety, compliance, and quality.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Experience of Building Management Systems (BMS).
- Experience using Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment maintenance and support.
- Experience within highly regulated environments.
- IOSH Working Safely or equivalent health and safety qualification.
