Building smarter customer experiences through technology, data and AI

At DC Thomson, we're transforming how we connect with audiences across our portfolio of trusted media, digital and subscription brands. We're looking for a curious and innovative Software Engineer to join our engineering team and help build the systems, services and experiences that power customer engagement at scale.

This is an exciting opportunity for a full stack engineer with experience in React, Node.js, GraphQL and modern database technologies who enjoys working across front-end experiences, backend systems and data flows to deliver high-quality products that create measurable business value.

This will help the advert perform better in candidate searches and attract engineers with the specific technical background you're seeking, rather than more generalist software developers.

You'll collaborate with engineers, product teams, data specialists and business stakeholders to design, build, test and support solutions that improve how we understand, engage and retain our audiences. As part of a forward-thinking technology team, you'll also have the opportunity to explore and apply emerging AI tools and technologies that are helping shape the future of software engineering and customer experiences.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working across interconnected systems and is excited by the opportunities that AI presents in modern software development.

What you'll be doing

  • Designing, developing and maintaining software applications, services and integrations across our customer engagement ecosystem.
  • Building and enhancing personalised customer experiences and profiling capabilities.
  • Developing and supporting backend systems that manage customer data flows between platforms and services.
  • Working with Iterable to deliver scalable and effective email and customer communication solutions.
  • Collaborating with product, engineering and business teams to understand requirements and deliver valuable technical solutions.
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing and resolving software and system issues.
  • Contributing to engineering best practices, automation, code quality and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participating in code reviews and knowledge-sharing activities across the wider engineering community.
  • Exploring opportunities to leverage AI-powered tools and emerging technologies to improve engineering effectiveness and customer outcomes.

Why join us?

You'll be joining a collaborative engineering team that values curiosity, experimentation and continuous learning. We believe technology, data and AI will play a critical role in shaping the future of our business, and we're looking for engineers who want to be part of that journey.

Whether you're developing new customer experiences, optimising data flows or piloting innovative AI-enabled ways of working, you'll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact across some of Scotland's best-known media and digital brands.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • Commercial experience developing software within modern engineering environments.
  • Strong experience building full stack applications using React and Node.js.
  • Hands-on experience developing and maintaining modern web applications using JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Experience designing, building and consuming APIs, including GraphQL.
  • Experience working with at least one relational database technology, including:
    • MySQL
    • PostgreSQL
    • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Experience developing, integrating and maintaining backend services, APIs and data-driven applications.
  • Knowledge of software architecture, design patterns and engineering best practices.
  • Experience working with source control, automated testing and CI/CD approaches.
  • An understanding of secure coding, software quality and operational reliability.
  • Experience troubleshooting and resolving technical issues within complex systems.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience contributing to code reviews, shared codebases and engineering standards.
  • A passion for continuous learning and developing technical expertise.

It would be great if you also have:

  • Experience working with MongoDB or other NoSQL database technologies.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Experience working with customer engagement, marketing automation or personalisation platforms.
  • Knowledge of Iterable or similar customer communication platforms.
  • Exposure to cloud-based services and modern engineering tooling.
  • Experience exploring or implementing AI-powered tools within software development workflows.
  • Experience working with event-driven architectures, data integration platforms or customer data ecosystems.

Location & Ways of Working

This is a hybrid role that offers flexibility while ensuring opportunities for collaboration and connection with colleagues across the business.

The successful applicant will be expected to attend one of our offices (Dundee, Aberdeen, Glasgow or London) for team collaboration, planning sessions and key business activities up to two days per month.

Outside of these occasions, you'll have the flexibility to work remotely. For those who enjoy spending more time in a collaborative office environment, you're welcome to make greater use of our office locations as often as you'd like.

To apply for this role, please follow our online application process and submit a CV and cover letter.
