
Data Analyst (BI Specialist)
Position Summary
The BI Specialist / Data Analyst is responsible for turning the data produced by Tayco's manufacturing and business systems into reporting that management and senior management can act on. This position designs, builds, and maintains Power BI reports and data models, writes and tunes the SQL beneath them, and maintains the Crystal Reports used for operational and printed reporting. Working alongside two full stack developers - one on the front end used by the shop floor, one on the back end and administrative side - and a project coordinator, this position complements in-house web and software development with the business intelligence layer that sits above it, and provides reporting, communication, and design support to the project as a whole. This position is based at Tayco's Etobicoke facility.

Your Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain Power BI reports, dashboards, datasets, and data
- models for management and senior management, including scheduled refreshes,
- gateway configuration, and workspace access.
- Write, review, and tune the SQL beneath all reporting, including queries, views, and
- stored procedures against the ERP and in-house application databases.
- Develop and maintain Crystal Reports for operational and printed reporting and
- support the users who depend on them.
- Translate requests from management into defined reporting requirements, the
- definitions, and the level of detail required - and confirm those definitions before
- building.
- Apply consistent visual design to reports and dashboards so that the intended
- audience can read them immediately, including layout, visual hierarchy, and
- appropriate selection of charts and tables.
- Administer and maintain reporting infrastructure on Windows Server, including
- scheduled jobs, permissions, service accounts, file shares, and report distribution.
- Contribute light front-end work to the in-house web applications alongside the
- development team, including HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap changes and the embedding
- of reports and dashboards into application pages.
- Prepare presentation and communication materials for management and senior
- management, including slide decks, one-page summaries, and status reporting on
- the project.
- Use Git and GitHub for version control of report definitions, SQL, and related code,
- following the team's branching and review practices.
- Verify reported figures against source systems and investigate and resolve
- discrepancies before they reach a decision-maker.
- Document data sources, report definitions, measures, and reporting processes, and
- keep that documentation current.
- Provide training and support to report to consumers throughout the organization.
- Use AI-assisted tools with sound judgement, reviewing what is generated, selecting
- which problems to delegate, and remaining accountable for every query, measure,
- and figure delivered.
- Perform various analysis and reporting tasks as required.
- Must have post-secondary education in business intelligence, computer science,
- information systems, statistics, or a related field, or 3-5 years of industry experience
- in a business intelligence or data analysis role.
- Must have demonstrated proficiency with Power BI, including data modelling, DAX
- measures, Power Query, report design, and the management of publishing and
- scheduled refreshes.
- Must have strong SQL skills, including joins, aggregation, window functions, views,
- and query performance tuning against relational databases.
- Experience developing and maintaining Crystal Reports is required.
- Working knowledge of Windows Server administration as it relates to reporting:
- scheduled tasks, permissions, service accounts, file shares, and report distribution.
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap, sufficient to make small and safe
- changes to existing web application pages and to embed reports into them.
- Must be able to use Git and GitHub for version control, including branching, pull
- requests, and code review.
- Must be able to use AI-assisted tools effectively and with judgement, including
- reviewing what is generated, knowing which problems to hand over, and being able
- to explain any query or measure delivered.
- Knowledge of Tayco's reporting environment is an asset: Power BI, Crystal Reports,
- SQL against the ERP and in-house PostgreSQL databases, Django-based internal
- applications, Windows Server, and Git and GitHub.
- Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services or Power BI Report Server, data
- warehouse or star schema design, advanced Excel data modelling, Python or R for
- analysis, Azure data services, or manufacturing and ERP data - production,
- inventory, purchasing, and sales - is considered an asset.
- Ability to apply sound visual design judgement to reporting, including layout, visual
- hierarchy, and selection of charts appropriate to the audience.
- Ability to gather reporting requirements from management, including clarifying
- definitions and confirming intent before building.
- Ability to present findings clearly to a non-technical audience, both in writing and
- verbally.
- Ability to question a figure that does not look correct, and to trace it back through
- the reporting to its source.
- Ability to work effectively within a small cross-functional team of developers and a
- project coordinator, and to coordinate reporting work with software development in
- progress
- Ability to read and interpret written and oral instructions.
- Must possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

- Required to have good organizational skills, excellent attention to detail, and be able
- to prioritize workload.

Salary Range : $60,000 to $65,000 Annually
