Principal Geotechnical Engineer
WSP has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our Napier business, with flexibility to be based in Napier, Taupō or Gisborne. This is a key role where you’ll provide technical direction, strengthen client relationships, and help grow our geotechnical capability across the region.
You’ll play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality geotechnical solutions across a diverse project portfolio – spanning infrastructure, land development, and natural hazard mitigation. While bringing together technical expertise and client leadership to drive both project success and business growth.
You will
- Lead and deliver complex geotechnical projects from investigation through to design and construction observation
- Provide expert technical advice across areas such as:
- Roads and infrastructure
- Landslides and slope stability
- River scour
- Residential and commercial foundations
- Conduct and oversee site investigations, analysis, reporting and design
- Undertake peer reviews and ensure compliance with NZ standards and industry best practice
- Build and maintain strong client relationships, identifying opportunities for growth
- Lead or contribute to proposals, bids and work programmes
- Support technical development, innovation and continuous improvement within the team
About you
- Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) either Geotechnical or Civil
- 10+ years’ experience in geotechnical engineering consultancy
- Strong experience in project delivery and management
- Deep knowledge of NZ standards, legislation and construction practices
- Proven ability to build client relationships and win work
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders
- A collaborative, solutions-focused approach
- A full, clean driver’s licence
