Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
We are looking for a proactive, technically skilled, and student-focused Teaching Technician to join our Engineering technical support team.
This is a varied and hands-on role where you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality teaching laboratory and workshop experiences for students across the Faculty of Engineering.
Working closely with academic staff, students, and fellow technicians, you will support the preparation, operation, and maintenance of engineering laboratories and workshops while ensuring a safe, organised, and engaging learning environment.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical problem-solving, working with a wide range of engineering equipment and technologies, and supporting students in a collaborative tertiary environment.
You’ll be joining a supportive and knowledgeable team that values innovation, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting the setup, operation, and maintenance of teaching laboratories and engineering workshop environments
- Assisting academic staff and students during practical teaching activities and laboratory sessions
- Providing technical advice and troubleshooting support across a range of engineering equipment and systems
- Maintaining workshop equipment, tools, and laboratory resources to ensure safe and effective operation
- Supporting health and safety processes and ensuring compliance within laboratory and workshop environments
- Assisting with fabrication, design, manufacturing, and technical preparation activities where required
- Monitoring and maintaining stock, equipment, and consumables
- Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across teaching laboratories and technical services
- Building positive relationships with students, academic staff, suppliers, and wider technical teams
This is a role where your technical expertise and practical support will directly contribute to the student learning experience and the successful delivery of engineering teaching activities.
This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week role, on a permanent contract. The salary range is $63,600 - $79,300 per annum depending on experience and qualifications.

You bring strong technical capability, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate confidently with both students and staff. You enjoy working collaboratively, can manage competing priorities, and are proactive in identifying solutions and improvements.
Most importantly, you are passionate about supporting students and contributing positively to a safe, engaging, and innovative teaching environment.
Ngā pūkenga motuhake | Important skills and experience
- A trade qualification or relevant experience in areas such as design, manufacturing, civil engineering, structural engineering, workshop practice, or mechanical engineering
- At least five years’ experience in a relevant technical or engineering support role
- Strong practical engineering and workshop skills
- Experience troubleshooting and resolving technical issues effectively
- Sound understanding of health and safety practices within engineering workshop or laboratory environments
- Excellent organisational, planning, and communication skills
- Strong relationship-building skills and a student-focused approach
- Ability to work proactively, independently, and collaboratively within a team environment
The following would be highly beneficial:
- Experience working within a tertiary education environment
- Experience supporting teaching laboratories or workshop-based learning in higher education
- A tertiary qualification in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or a related discipline
- Experience or interest in teaching, learning, or pedagogy
