We are seeking a highly capable BMS Design Engineer to support the successful delivery of projects ranging from £30k small works through to multi-million-pound schemes across multiple market verticals. This is a predominantly remote-based design role, suited to an engineer who can take ownership of design outputs, coordinate with key stakeholders, and produce clear, accurate documentation that enables smooth project delivery.

The role will involve reviewing panel drawings, creating points lists, developing and revising control documentation, liaising with OEMs and consultants, and ensuring designs are practical, compliant, and ready for handover to onsite commissioning engineers.

You will work across a varied project portfolio, supporting commercial, public sector, education, healthcare, residential, retail, and specialist environments where robust BMS design is essential to operational performance, energy efficiency, and reliable commissioning.

The position is predominantly remote, with occasional site attendance required where design support, surveys, technical reviews, or commissioning assistance are necessary. Flexibility to support onsite activity when required is important.

This is an excellent opportunity for a design-focused BMS professional who is confident working independently, comfortable engaging with technical stakeholders, and motivated by delivering high-quality design packages that support efficient project execution.

The role reports into the projects / design delivery team.

Key Responsibilities

Typical design outputs may include points lists, BMS network architecture, control schematics, panel information, cause-and-effect requirements, device schedules, graphics briefs, software engineering notes, and commissioning handover packs.

  • Produce and develop BMS design documentation for projects ranging from £30k small works to multi-million-pound schemes.
  • Review panel drawings, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and associated technical documentation for accuracy and suitability.
  • Create detailed points lists, schedules, and control documentation to support procurement, panel manufacture, software engineering, and commissioning.
  • Work closely with OEMs, consultants, project managers, software engineers, panel builders, and onsite commissioning engineers.
  • Interpret consultant specifications, mechanical schedules, electrical drawings, and project requirements to develop practical BMS design solutions.
  • Provide timely design revisions in response to client, consultant, OEM, project, or commissioning feedback.
  • Support design coordination across multiple market verticals including commercial, healthcare, education, public sector, residential, retail, and specialist environments.
  • Prepare clear handover information for onsite commissioning engineers, ensuring design intent, points lists, panel information, network architecture, and control requirements are clearly understood.
  • Assist with technical queries during installation and commissioning, providing remote support and attending site where required.
  • Contribute to design standards, templates, and continuous improvement of internal processes.
  • Maintain accurate records of design changes, revisions, and project documentation.

Candidates should have previous experience in a BMS design, controls engineering, or building services role, with the ability to work confidently from specifications, drawings, schedules, and client requirements. Relevant technical qualifications, manufacturer training, or demonstrable equivalent experience will be considered.

  • Strong proven experience working with BMS design and control systems, with Trend and Tridium / Niagara experience essential.
  • Experience with other major BMS platforms is beneficial.
  • PLC and SCADA experience is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC plant, building services systems, control strategies, and integration requirements.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical schedules, electrical schematics, panel drawings, consultant specifications, and control philosophy documents.
  • Good working knowledge of open protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and associated network principles.
  • Confident producing accurate points lists, design schedules, control documentation, and technical handover packs.
  • Ability to manage multiple design packages at different stages while maintaining quality, accuracy, and programme commitments.

Performance Expectations

  • Deliver accurate, coordinated, and practical BMS design packages that support successful installation and commissioning.
  • Maintain clear communication with internal teams, consultants, OEMs, and commissioning engineers.
  • Respond positively to design comments, revisions, and technical challenges while protecting quality and programme.
  • Manage workload effectively across multiple projects, priorities, and market sectors.
  • Support onsite teams with clear, practical technical guidance when required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in design quality, documentation standards, and project delivery efficiency.

Personal Attributes

  • Self-driven, organised, and comfortable working predominantly remotely.
  • Detail-focused with a strong commitment to accuracy and technical quality.
  • Confident communicating with consultants, OEMs, project teams, and commissioning engineers.
  • Practical and delivery-focused, with an understanding of how design decisions affect installation and commissioning.
  • Able to work across multiple projects while remaining calm, structured, and responsive.
  • Motivated by technical problem solving, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Opportunity to work on a varied portfolio of projects from £30k to multi-million-pound schemes.
  • Exposure to multiple market verticals and technically diverse environments.
  • Salary Sacrifice Pension.
  • Medicare Health Cash Plan.
  • Bravo Benefits and EAP Scheme.
  • Access to an EV Salary Sacrifice Scheme.
  • Access to company Private Health Insurance.
