Creative Director, Copy
About the Team
OpenAI didn’t begin as a traditional company. It began as an idea: that artificial intelligence could be developed in a way that benefits everyone. As a creative team, our role is to help make sure the work behind that idea is understood as it leaves the lab and meets the world.
This company works at the frontier of intelligence. Like any frontier, it’s unfinished, constantly shifting, and still being explored. Our job is to stay close to that uncertainty and help shape how this story gets told in a way that feels grounded and human. We do this through campaigns, launches, films, brand systems, and work that doesn’t fit neatly into any of those categories yet. This team is for people who want to help shape something from the beginning.
About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced Creative Director, Copy to join our growing in-house creative team focused on OpenAI’s business audiences. In this role, you’ll help define how we communicate the value of OpenAI to organizations - from growing businesses and startups to global enterprises and developers building with our technology.
You’ll concept and write across integrated campaigns, product launches, customer stories, events, and other brand moments. You’ll translate complex products, technical capabilities, and business outcomes into clear, compelling ideas that resonate with decision-makers, builders, and teams adopting AI.
This is a deeply hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable developing a big campaign platform, shaping a messaging framework, writing a film script, or refining a headline. You’ll work closely with design, production, product marketing, and communications from the earliest stages of an idea through execution.
To us, creativity is a team sport. Ideas get better when you talk them through and build on each other’s thinking. We value curiosity over certainty, kindness over ego, and the ability to balance creative ambition with clarity and decisiveness.
This role is based in New York, NY. We use a hybrid work model of three days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role you will
Concept and write integrated brand campaigns for OpenAI’s business audiences
Translate complex products, technical capabilities, and use cases into clear, human, and emotionally resonant stories
Develop campaign platforms, messaging frameworks, headlines, scripts, manifestos, and narrative systems
Create work that connects OpenAI’s products to meaningful business challenges and outcomes
Shape how OpenAI speaks to business leaders, technical decision-makers, developers, and teams adopting AI
Write across customer stories, product launches, films, digital experiences, events, social content, and executive communications
Partner closely with design, motion, production, brand strategy, and agency teams to bring ideas to life
Collaborate with Product Marketing, Sales, Product, Communications, and other partners to understand audiences and business priorities
Build flexible messaging systems that can work across industries, audiences, markets, and channels
Evolve and steward OpenAI’s voice and tone across business communications
Present creative ideas and explain the thinking behind them to cross-functional partners and senior stakeholders
Move fluidly between high-level concepts and detailed execution, staying close to the work throughout the process
Manage multiple complex projects, evolving inputs, and compressed timelines with clarity and confidence
Help challenge conventions about what enterprise and technology marketing can look and sound like
You might thrive in this role if you
Have 10+ years of experience writing for brands, gained at a creative agency known for creative excellence and/or in-house at a modern technology company, with experience in both strongly preferred
Are an exceptional writer and conceptual thinker with a portfolio of distinctive, integrated creative work
Have experience writing for B2B, enterprise, developer, or other technically sophisticated audiences
Can make complex products and technical concepts understandable without flattening their meaning
Understand how to connect product capabilities to customer needs, organizational change, and meaningful business outcomes
Can move comfortably between campaign concepts, messaging strategy, scripts, headlines, long-form narratives, and detailed copy
Have deep fluency in voice, tone, rhythm, structure, and storytelling
Can find a compelling creative idea in an ambiguous brief—or help shape the brief when one doesn’t yet exist
Enjoy building ideas collaboratively with designers, strategists, producers, and cross-functional partners
Can advocate for ambitious creative work while responding constructively to strategic, technical, and commercial constraints
Operate autonomously and take strong ownership of your work from concept through execution
Balance creativity with the clarity, credibility, and precision required for business audiences
Are comfortable working across multiple projects and adapting quickly as priorities and inputs evolve
Nice to have
Experience working with enterprise technology, developer platforms, SaaS products, or emerging categories
Experience writing customer stories that connect individual experiences with broader organizational impact
Familiarity with the needs of enterprise buyers, technical evaluators, developers, and business leaders
Experience with executive storytelling, major industry events, or sales-enablement narratives
Background in editorial, long-form storytelling, filmmaking, or documentary work
Familiarity with integrated campaign development and scalable brand systems
Curiosity about AI, the future of work, and how technology changes the way organizations operate and create
