Managing Editor
Partners for the Common Good is a national community development financial institution that builds economically thriving communities by expanding access to capital and financial services for low-income people and places.
We seek a senior editorial leader to help us build out and run a digital news platform that serves the community development finance sector. Our vision is to equip the greater ecosystem of mission-driven lenders, investors, grantors, developers, consultants, and regulators with the market insights and technical resources to attract capital, find partners, and develop projects that have the power to transform high-potential communities. By bridging information silos and facilitating the exchange of data and expertise, we will serve institutions working together to strengthen economic resilience across the country — and do so with accuracy, fairness, and editorial integrity.
This role combines traditional journalism with hands-on leadership in shaping a modern, digital-first news product. The ideal candidate has experience in covering finance and public policy; brings strong news judgment and editorial and reportorial craft; and has worked closely with information technology specialists and designers on content and data management, distribution, and display.
The Managing Editor reports to the Chief of Communications and Marketing and is expected to exercise day-to-day editorial judgment over news coverage and content decisions, consistent with established journalistic practices. The role also demands working closely with a small team dedicated to getting done whatever needs doing. Partners is currently working in a hybrid structure in which team members have the option to work remotely on Monday and Friday and are in the office Tuesday through Thursday.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the senior news editor, applying strong editorial judgment to daily story selection and longer-term coverage plans, ensuring coverage is timely, relevant, and comprehensive.
- Report and edit original content, including breaking news, summaries, analysis, explainers, and features.
- Build upon and uphold standards for accuracy, sourcing, fairness, and transparency.
- Work with tech and design team members to shape the content and user experience across the platform.
- Use audience data and feedback to refine coverage, formats, and distribution strategies.
- Conceive of multimedia design components and formats to keep and grow audiences, including audio, video, and motion graphics to enhance storytelling.
Requirements
We seek a professional with an entrepreneurial spirit, strong commitment to our mission, and:
- Demonstrated experience in journalism or editorial leadership in a digital environment, ideally on finance and public policy topics.
- Excellent editing and writing skills, with the capability to produce high-quality work in a small-team environment without layered editorial structures.
- Ability to manage several workflows autonomously, including reporting enterprise stories, editing summaries and contributed pieces, and assisting design and distribution functions across both urgent daily priorities and longer-term strategic initiatives.
- Proven ability to identify, shape, and prioritize important stories.
- Deep understanding of digital news consumption, audience behavior, and modern content distribution.
- Team-orientation, with strong people skills and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
- Comfort operating in a resource-constrained, entrepreneurial environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Other factors we will consider
- Subject-matter expertise in finance and policy.
- Experience launching or scaling a digital media product or newsroom.
- Familiarity with reader analytics.
- Experience working in or alongside organizations that are not traditional media companies.
- Experience managing teams or freelancers.
- Commitment to the team and collaborative work internally and externally
