Pipe fitter needed in Antarctica

Location: McMurdo Station, Antarctica (approximately 1000 residents in summer season)
Deployment: October 2026 - Feb 2026 (ideally you will be flexible, and able to stay on longer if required)
About the Role
As a Pipe fitter – Facilities, you will perform a mix of pipe welding, pipe fitting, and construction/maintenance work under the supervision of the Plumbing Foreman. Work is assigned based on your experience and the operational schedule. This role is essential to keeping McMurdo Station’s critical infrastructure running in one of the unique environments on Earth.

Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • NZ Equivalent: AS/NZS 2980, ISO 9606, or ASME IX 6G certification
  • 3+ years as a certified pipe welder/pipe fitter, ideally with industrial or commercial experience
  • New Zealand citizenship, permanent residency or valid NZ work rights (no sponsorship available, WHV is acceptable with relevant experience)
  • Full New Zealand driving licence
  • Ability to pass medical, dental, drug testing and criminal background checks
  • Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and diagrams
  • Experience in commercial or industrial construction/maintenance
  • Basic computer literacy and willingness to learn digital tracking systems

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform pipe welding and structural welding on maintenance and construction projects
  • Cut, fit, weld, connect, and install various types and sizes of piping
  • Weld using multi process techniques
  • Respond promptly to emergency service calls, including after-hours
  • Document hours, materials, and work performed accurately
  • Communicate job progress and material/labour needs to the Supervisor
  • Work from job plans, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, manuals, and codes
  • Identify hazards and maintain a safe work environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned
